Women's T/F Claims Towson Tiger Invitational Title Behind Six Event Victories

BRONX, N.Y. – The Rutgers women's track & field team kicked off the 2018 indoor season by bringing home the Towson Tiger Invitational title behind six event victories on Saturday at the Armory.
Rutgers collected 148.75 points enroute to the crown, followed by Delaware in second with 98.5 and host Towson in third with 93 points.
Two Scarlet Knights won individual events in their Scarlet Knight track & field debuts. Newcomer Oniesha Clarke took first place in the 60m with an ECAC qualifying time of 7.45, which is third fastest time in the RU record books, while freshman Olympia Martin, who led RU in three cross country races for RU in the fall, was won the mile in 5:03.99
Senior Bria Saunders kicked off 2018 with an ECAC qualifying time of 24.94 in winning the 200m, while junior Phyllis Gordon started off the new season racing to an ECAC qualifying mark of 1:15.88 as the top finisher in the 500m.
Additionally, fifth-year senior Sarah Robbie collected the 800m title in a time of 2:14.70.
Freshman Courteney Campbell, meanwhile, led the Scarlet Knights in the field events making her first Rutgers appearance clearing the bar at an ECAC qualifying height of 1.70m for her first collegiate crown in the high jump.
Rutgers also saw four runner-up performances, in which two individual results were captured by freshmen Scarlet Knights and a returner set a new PR.
Rookie Dakota Gerges followed Gordon across the finish line in the 500m posting an ECAC time in her second place finish, while classmate Kiera Nealon also took home a second place showing in the 1000m with a time of 3:00.88.
Sophomore Nadia Saponara followed on the heels of Martin in the mile to take second and capture a new PR. Saponara placed third in 5:06.88, besting her previous top time of 5:23.10 set at last year's Villanova Open.
The 4x400m relay team also took second place as Gerges, Kayla Jackson, Robbie and Gordon combined for an ECAC qualifying time of 3:52.10.
Other notable performances for the Scarlet Knights at the Towson Tigers Invitational were sophomore Stephanie Mauer and junior Genevieve Cickavage posting PR's in 3000m. Mauer raced to a time of 10:34.71, resetting her previous personal best of 10:46.86 from last year's Colonial Relays. Cickavage, meanwhile, claimed her best time since 2016's Gotham Cup with her time of 10:43.22.
The Scarlet Knights also sent Selena Thorne to the Beantown Pentathlon Challenge hosted by Harvard. The sophomore Scarlet Knight finished in seventh place with 3,046 points. Included in her results were a second place showing in the high jump at 1.62m (5' 3.75") and third place
finish in long jump at 5.10m (16' 8.75").
The Rutgers women's indoor track and field team is back in action next weekend in Lubbock, Texas. The Scarlet Knights will participate in the Texas Tech Invitational on Friday, Jan. 19.
