Women’s Tennis Opens 2018 Spring Slate at NJIT Invitational

Scarlet Knights join Fordham, Army, and NJIT for flight tournament
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women's tennis team is set to open its 2018 spring campaign at the NJIT Invitational from Jan. 20-21. The flight tournament features Fordham, Army and host NJIT and will take place at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility in Newark, New Jersey.
DOUBLES DRAWS
In Doubles Draw A, freshman Maya Jacobs and sophomore Jaci Cochrane will face Fordham's Tatiana Grigoryan and Alexis Zobeideh in the opening round. Senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik take on the Rams' Carina Ma and Estelle Wong.
Doubles Draw B will see senior Chloe Lee and freshman Isabelle Da Silva compete with Army's duo of Leslie Frankland and Abi Waldman.
SINGLES DRAWS
In Singles Draw A, the first round will see Muzik and Du square off with NJIT's Advaita Saravanan and Fordham's Wong, respectively. Jacobs and Lee compete in Draw B, as Jacobs will take on the Black Knights' Boubel and Lee faces the Rams' Grigoryan.
Cochrane, RU's singles leader with nine wins in the fall, earns a first round bye in Draw C and will match up with the winner of Carolina Sa of Fordham and Amanda Helminsky of NJIT. Da Silva faces Gloria Son of Army in her singles draw.
SCOUTING NJIT
NJIT registered an 8-13 record a year ago. The Highlanders return Natcha Minc, who finished second on the team with 15 singles victories and contributed to 15 doubles wins on the year. Also returning is Alba Rosas Garcia, who added 13 singles wins and aided in 14 doubles victories.
SCOTING ARMY
Army notched a 21-7 mark last season. In the fall, Hannah Boubel boasted a team-best 15-2 mark in singles action. Ana Joyner and Melanie Allen followed with 10 singles victories each. Doubles action saw Boubel and Sasha Inchauste lead the pairs with a record of 10-2.
SCOUTING FORDHAM
Fordham posted a 20-4 record in 2016-17. This fall, Maia Balce and Estelle Wong paced the team with eight wins each in fall singles play. In doubles competition, Carina Ma and Wong registered a team-best 12-1 victory.
