PISCATAWAY, N.J. – For the first time in program history, Rutgers wrestling features a unanimous No. 1 wrestler in its lineup, as sophomore 125-pounder
Nick Suriano was elevated to the top position in his weight class by both
Intermat and
FloWrestling on Tuesday.
Suriano is a perfect 18-0 in his first season with the Scarlet Knights, which includes a 9-0 mark in dual action. The former Bergen Catholic star has collected bonus points in seven of his nine dual victories, scoring 38 team points for No. 16 Rutgers. Overall, Suriano has produced seven tech falls, five major decisions, five decisions and a pin in 2017-18.
In his 18 matches this season, Suriano has outscored his opponents, 249-61, and has defeated five wrestlers currently ranked in the latest
Intermat Poll.
Suriano also became the first Midlands Champion in Rutgers history this season after he defeated then-No. 10 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State) to secure the 125-pound title on Dec. 30. Suriano defeated the No. 10, No. 12 (Sebastian Rivera, Northwestern) and No. 18 (Zeke Moisey, West Virginia) ranked wrestlers at the tournament in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Rutgers (5-4, 1-3) hosts No. 1 Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the RAC for a 2 p.m. dual on BTN. The Scarlet Knights feature six wrestlers ranked in the latest
