Gymnastics Preview: Floor Exercise
Jan 03 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Floor exercise has been a strength for Rutgers gymnastics over the years, and the Scarlet Knights look to continue the success in 2018. The team posted its best Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of any event last season at 48.895 with a high of 49.075.
As with the other three events, there has been competition for spots in lineup with a deep group of gymnasts vying to compete. Junior Jenna Rizkalla returns with the top RQS (9.825) from a year ago, while senior Libby Groden and junior Riahanah Ali also reached the 9.800 mark. In addition, upperclassmen Michelle Amoresano, Jenna Crisalli and Makenzey Shank all bring back experience.
"You get to show off your personality the most on this event," head coach Louis Levine said. "You get to pick your music. There is plenty of opportunity to show the crowd who you are on floor. I think they enjoy the performance aspect of it. The expectation is that we're going to be a great floor team."
Sophomore Chloe DeVries is set to return from injury and be a factor after scoring as high as 9.850 as a rookie, with classmate Erin McLachlan showing potential to break in for the first time in this event at some point. Transfers Shannon Farrell and Rachel Ley have also put together routines that could contribute.
The freshman class includes several gymnasts primed to see action, including Sophia Atienza, Belle Huang, Hannah Prieto and Toni Williams.
"We have talked a lot about performing and the artistry aspect of the event," Levine said. " This is an event where we have a lot of fun and get the crowd energized with each performance. That excitement definitely plays a role when you're being judged on your routines."
The Scarlet Knights open the campaign on Jan. 6 at Arizona in a quad meet before heading back to the Livingston Gym on Jan. 13 to take on Illinois, Yale and Southern Connecticut. RU will host four meets overall, including the Big Five Meet at the RAC on March 17. Season tickets can be purchased for $25 by calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678) or by clicking here.
