Oct 13 | Women's Tennis
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rutgers' strong showing continued on Saturday at the ITA Northeast Regional Women's Championships at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Five Scarlet Knights will compete in the round of 16 on Sunday, comprised of sophomore Maya Jacobs in singles and two pairs in doubles.
Jacobs won two matches to become one of just two unseeded players to advance to Sunday's round of 16. She defeated Arina Tauuyenko of Fordham (6-4, 6-2) in the morning, before earning a hard-fought victory over Syracuse's Guzal Yusupova (6-4, 7-5) in the afternoon. She moves ahead to meet 17th-seeded Caroline Dunleavy of Yale on her home court on Sunday.
Freshman Kristiana Zahare and junior Jaci Cochrane continued their winning ways as well. The duo downed Elene Tsouliakri and Natasha Irani (8-5) of Boston College and advance to meet Boston University's Shelly Yaloz and Emily Kim.
Also advancing to the round of 16 in doubles is junior Katherine Muzik and freshman Tess Fisher. The pair disposed of Siena's Dilara Spicer and Nanea Perkins (8-3) and will square off against Columbia's Jennifer Kerr and Sarah Hu.
Muzik began Saturday with a victory over BU's Yaloz (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) in singles, but was unable to down fourth-seeded Miranda Ramirez (6-0, 6-2) of Syracuse in the afternoon.
In other singles action, freshman Tess Fisher fell short versus Princeton's Nicole Kalhorn (7-6, 6-3) and freshman Sydney Kaplan dropped her match against Princeton's Clare McKee (6-2, 7-6).
Sunday's competition will feature one round of singles at 10 a.m., followed by two rounds of doubles. Warm-ups begin at 9 a.m.
Under the leadership of head coach Hilary Ritchie, the ITA Northeast Regional Women's Championships are the third of four events in which the Scarlet Knights will compete this fall.
