Junior cards third top-10 result of fall season
WESTFIELD, Ind. – For the third time this fall, Tony Jiang carded a top-10 finish to highlight action for Rutgers men's golf on Monday at the Chatham Hills Collegiate in Westfield, Indiana. The junior tied for sixth with a three-under-par 213 (74-67-72) to close out play at the Club at Chatham Hills.
Battling 40-degree temperatures and 10 mile-per-hour winds, the Scarlet Knights finished seventh with an eight-over-par 872 (287-287-298). Purdue captured the team title, followed by Marquette and Northwestern.
Jiang shot an even 72 in the final round, courtesy of five birdies and eight pars. His final 18 holes closed out another impressive outing, as he finished second in the field with 16 birdies and tied for third overall in par-3 scoring with a 2.92 (-1) average during his three rounds. Jiang's best 18 holes came on Sunday when he carded a five-under-par 67 in the second round.
"I was proud of the way Tony performed, especially because he has struggled in cold and windy situations like what we dealt with today," said head coach Rob Shutte. "For him to finish off the round and get within the top 10 was impressive. I'm excited to see how he does in our next outing."
The tied-for-sixth result marked Jiang's third top-10 result during the fall season. Jiang also tied for eighth at the OTC Collegiate from Sept. 24-25 and opened the fall campaign with a tied-for-fifth result at the Badger Invitational.
Oliver Whatley tied for 22rd with a one-over-par 217 (72-70-75), as the sophomore led the team and finished third overall with 39 pars during his three rounds of play. After a strong opening round on Sunday with his four-under-par 68, rookie Shayler Dance finished with two eagles to co-lead in that category and tied for 37th overall (223: 68-76-79).
Sophomore Christopher Gotterup (224: 75-74-75) tied for 41st and classmate Putt Sridama (228: 73-79-76) tied for 48th to round out the team scoring.
"Overall, I think the team knows that they can play with a lot of teams, it's just a matter of having everyone perform well at the same time," Shutte said. "The fields that we play in are deep, so there is no margin for error."
