
Football Mourns the Passing of Anton Hoeflinger

Rutgers Hall of Fame inductee served as captain in 1963
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers football community remembers Anton "Tony" Hoeflinger, who passed away Monday at the age of 76. The Butler, New Jersey, native started on the undefeated 1961 team, served as a captain in 1963 and later earned induction into the Rutgers Hall of Fame in 1997.
Hoeflinger started 24-of-27 games during his career after capturing the starting right guard spot on the 1961 squad that finished a perfect 9-0. According to coach John Bateman, "as good as a guard as he's seen." He also saw time at linebacker on defense and was known for his speed. Hoeflinger was awarded Williamson All-America honors, garnered All-East status and collected the David Bender Trophy after captaining the 1963 team.
Earning a history degree from Rutgers, Hoeflinger later taught fourth and fifth grade at Hillcrest School in Franklin Township for 38 years. He is survived by; his wife of 46 years, Eleanor Hoeflinger, their children Galen Hoeflinger and his wife Kristen and Beth Hoeflinger and her husband Michael Sacks, his brother Daniel Hoeflinger and his wife Deborah of Riverdale, and three grandchildren Zakary, Sydney, and Matthew along with many friends and relatives.
