PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers basketball guard Corey Sanders has signed a contract with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the G-League affiliate of the NBA's Houston Rockets.
Sanders played three seasons for the Scarlet Knights. He played in 94 career games, averaging 14.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He finished his Rutgers career eighth all-time in assists (328), 10th all-time in steals (136) and 17th all-time in points (1,370). A two-time All-Big Ten and two-time All-Met selection, Sanders averaged 15.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game with 106 assists and 44 steals last season.
"I'm very happy about this opportunity," Sanders said. "It feels like my hard work is paying off. This is just the beginning. I'm glad that I found an organization that believes in me and wants me to be a part of their team."
The Lakeland, Fla. product was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after averaging a tournament-best 24.7 points in three games, including two Scarlet Knight wins last March at Madison Square Garden. He shot 53.3 percent as RU made its deepest conference tournament run since 1998.
Sanders scored in double-digits 70 times in his career. He reached at least 20 points a total of 20 times.
"Rutgers helped me a lot to prepare for this," Sanders explained. "Both mentally and physically. Coach David VanDyke and his staff got me prepared in the weight room. The coaching staff really prepared me as well. When Coach Pikiell came here, he challenged me and helped me become mentally prepared. They taught me how to preserve through adversity and learn the bigger message in life. I learned a lot from being here the last three years. I had a great career here. Rutgers brought me and treated me like one of their own."
Sanders will head to Rio Grande Valley on October 15, with training camp beginning in late October. The season begins for the Vipers on November 3.
Rutgers had two other alumni play in the G-League last season. Kadeem Jack averaged 12.0 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and JJ Moore posted 7.3 points per game with the Long Island Nets.
