Men’s Golf Sixth After Day 1 at Mountaineer Invitational

Gotterup leads charge at even par for seventh place individual standing
BRIDGEPORT, W.V. (Oct. 8, 2018) – Rutgers men's golf finished Day 1 of the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational in sixth place out of 14 teams with a score of 17 over par through just short of two rounds on Monday. Round 2 was suspended due to darkness at 6:50 p.m. and will resume Tuesday morning at the 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club.
Following a card of 306 in the first 18 of 54 scheduled holes, the Scarlet Knights are currently one under for second round play, which is the second best team score of the round thus far. Overall, West Virginia leads at four over in front of Davidson's five over.
Sophomore Christopher Gotterup paced the Scarlet Knights on Day 1 and sits tied for seventh place amid the 78-player field at even par. The Little Silver, New Jersey native carded a two-over-par 74 in the opening round on the strength of six birdies, including three straight to begin the back nine on holes 10-12 to get him back to even-par in Round 1. He carried the momentum into the second round, where he is currently two under through 14 while birdying three of the four par-five holes.
Freshman Shayler Dance led the Scarlet Knights with an even-par 72 in Round 1 before a two-over-par start to the second round through 16. The Rutgers rookie finished Monday tied for 13th place at two under. Dance's 72 in the opening round was aided by birdies on hole Nos. 2, 8, 14 and 15.
The Scarlet Knights gained ground on the field on Friday's par-fives, with a 4.95 average and a team score of two under. Those marks are ranked third in the 14-team invitational. Rutgers also had the third most birdies on the day with 26.
Junior Tony Jiang and sophomore Oliver Whatley are both tied for 31st place following matching Day 1 scores of 80 and even par through 16 for Jiang and 15 for Whatley. Sophomore Bobby Weise (82 – +3 through 16) stands tied for 59th.
Competing as an individual, freshman Jack Doherty made his collegiate debut with a five-over-par 77 in the opening round, and is five over through 15 in the second round.
Round 2 will resume on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., followed directly by the third and final round.
