Rutgers places fifth in 14-team field at Pete Dye Golf Club
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Sophomore Christopher Gotterup tied for sixth to highlight action for Rutgers men's golf at the Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Scarlet Knights finished fifth out of 14 teams (306-292-302: 900) at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
Host West Virginia captured the team title, followed by Davidson and Eastern Kentucky. WVU's Max Sear claimed the individual title with a six-under-par 210 (69-72-69).
The tied-for-sixth result is the first top 10 finish for Gotterup (74-70-73: 217) this season and third of his career. After he finished with a two-under-par 70 in the second round on Tuesday morning, Gotterup closed out the invite with a one-over-par 73 during his final 18 holes of play. Gotterup carded 13pars and birdies on holes 12 and 14 in the final round of the tournament.
Gotterup finished the invite second in Par 4 scoring with a 3.90 average, with his 13 birdies in his three rounds a play also second in the field.
"It was great to see Chris there in the top 10," said head coach Rob Shutte. "The setup of the course was challenging, and that is indicated in today's scores. Pins were tough, so it was a golf course where we just had to play for par and wait for birdies, and there were stretches where we didn't do that. Overall, we're a little disappointed, but we have quick turnaround for our next tournament. There was a lot to learn from today."
Tony Jiang (80-72-74: 226) used a two-over-par 74 in the final round to move up seven spots, as the junior tied for 21st. Rookie Shayler Dance (72-77-79: 228) also joined Gotterup and Jiang in the top 30 of competitors with his tied-for-30th result.
Sophomore Oliver Whatley (80-73-78) tied for 39th, while classmate Bobby Weise (82-78-77) tied for 58th. In his collegiate debut, rookie Jack Doherty (77-79-87) finished 70th.
RU returns to action from Oct. 14-15 at the Chatham Hills Intercollegiate in Westfield, Indiana.
*competed as an individual
