Women’s Soccer Opens NCAA Tournament at Duke

Scarlet Knights and Blue Devils meet on Friday, Nov. 9

PISCATAWAY, N.J. –  RV Rutgers women's soccer opens the NCAA Tournament at No. 9 Duke for a First Round match on Friday, Nov. 9. Match time is set for 7 p.m. ET in Durham, North Carolina.
 
SCOUTING RUTGERS
  • Rutgers (11-3-5, 7-1-3 Big Ten) qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight season, ninth time in the last 11 years and 13th time overall.
  • The Scarlet Knights finished as the runner-ups for the conference regular season title, as the second-place result marks the highest for the program since joining the league in 2014.
  • A program-record seven Scarlet Knights received All-Big Ten laurels this season, including sophomore forward Amirah Ali (First Team), senior back Kenie Wright (Second Team), junior midfielder Nicole Whitley (Third Team), senior back Madison Pogarch (Third Team), junior defender Chantelle Swaby (Third Team), and freshman Meagan McClelland (Third Team) were named All-Big Ten. McClelland and classmate Shea Holland were selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team as well.
  • McClelland, who led the league in goals-against average and shutouts, was bestowed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. It is the third straight year an RU rookie has claimed the honor and the fourth consecutive year earning at least one of the Big Ten's major awards.
  • Rutgers enters the NCAA Tournament with a goals-against average (0.624) that ranks 27th in the nation.
  • Individually, McClelland, ranks 27th in the NCAA with a 0.624 GAA, while Ali, ranks 22nd with five game-winning goals.
  • RU earned a spot in its fifth straight Big Ten Tournament this year, claiming its highest seed to date at No. 2. The Scarlet Knights were edged by the eventual 2018 Big Ten Tournament Champions, Minnesota, by a late goal in a quarterfinal match at home.
  • Rutgers is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
SCOUTING DUKE
  • No. 9 Duke finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-3-2, including a second-place finish in the ACC with an 8-1-1 conference mark.
  • Duke received a No. 4 seed, earning a national seed for the fourth-straight season. Additionally, the Blue Devils qualified for the Tournament for the 15th time in the last 16 seasons.
  • Duke fell in a 1-0 decision to then-No. 9 Florida State in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals.
  • Five Blue Devils collected All-ACC accolades, led by Kayla McCoy with First Team honors after leading the team with 10 goals and 27 points.
  • In net, Brooke Heinsohn has seen the most time, maintaining a 0.72 GAA with 55 saves and eight shutouts.
  • Friday's match will mark the fifth meeting between the programs. The squads last met in the First Round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, when Rutgers earned a 2-0 victory over Duke at a neutral site.
