Women's Hoops Hosts LSU on Saturday on BTN

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's basketball team returned to the win column a week ago and is back in action on Saturday against LSU in front of the BTN cameras at 4 p.m.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The Scarlet Knights fended off a late fourth quarter surge by the Crimson to leave Boston last week with a 60-49 victory. Redshirt sophomore guard Arella Guirantes and redshirt senior forward Stasha Carey led all scorers with 19 points each. For Guirantes, who sank 6-of-6 from the free throw line, it was new season-high.
On the boards, Rutgers was led by Caitlin Jenkins, who for the fourth time this season has hauled in double digit rebounds. The senior forward has 10 against the Crimson.
RU led Harvard by as many as 15 in the third quarter before the Crimson made it a one possession game with 3:31 left to play. The Scarlet Knights, however, dropped in five quick points and allow Harvard only on field goal over the final minutes and a half of action.
ABOUT LSU
The Tigers roll into Piscataway with a 5-2 overall record and coming off an 86-36 Tuesday afternoon win over McNeese State. LSU are winners in three of their last four contests with the lone setback being a 61-38 decision against Kansas on Nov. 29.
Ayana Mitchell averages a double-double for LSU behind 15.3 points and nation's second best 12.4 rebounds per game. Additionally, Mitchell is currently fifth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (9.0), ninth in offensive rebounds per game (5.0) and 14th in field goal percentage (.625).
Khayla Pointer is the only Tiger in double digits at 11.4 per game along with a team third-best 5.1 boards per contest.
As a team, the Tigers are seventh nationally in fewest turnovers have committed only 95 miscues, for an average of 15.9 per game.
LAST TIME VS. LSU
Guided by four Scarlet Knights in double-figures, the Rutgers women's basketball team extended its win streak to four and ended nonconference play with a 69-57 victory over LSU back on Dec. 19, 2015.
Tyler Scaife registered a game-high 18 points, followed by Kahleah Copper with 15 points. Shrita Parker and freshman Khadaizha Sanders each registered career-highs to round out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Three Lady Tigers finished in double-digits as Alexis Hyder led her squad with 16 points and seven rebounds. Anne Pederson followed with 11 points, while Rina Hill added in 10 points in the loss.
Down 6-4 early, Rutgers responded on a 6-0 run with 5:01 to go in the first quarter to take over the lead. The back and forth battle continued as the margin remained as close as one across the following four minutes, however, Rutgers was able to establish a 20-15 edge with less than a minute to go in the frame.
The teams traded points into the second quarter as LSU managed to tie up the count at 25-25. From there, the Lady Tigers used their momentum to generate a 7-2 run and reclaim the lead for the first time since the 6:22 mark of the first quarter.
Parker responded to the burst by registering back-to-back 3-pointers, returning the lead to RU at 33-32 and igniting a 10-2 run for the Scarlet Knights to close the first half. Rutgers carried a 37-34 edge into the locker room.
Rutgers kept its pace moving into the second half. After LSU's Alexis Hyder knotted the game at 37-37 moments in the third quarter, RU exploded for a 16-1 run, with five different Scarlet Knights in the scoring mix, to control the lead for good.
Jenna Deemer notched the Lady Tigers first points of the fourth quarter with a four-point play to set the margin at 59-46 with 6:55 to go. However, RU held tight to its control, following with five consecutive points capped by a three-pointer from Briyona Canty to give the Scarlet Knights their largest lead of the night at 64-46.
RU maintained at least a 12-point cushion for the final four minutes of the game to close out with a 69-57 victory.
A LOSS IS STILL A LOSS, BUT...
RU's first loss of the season was to a Drake squad that enters this week at 8-2 overall and No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll. The Bulldogs posted a victory over then No. 12/13 South Carolina to take third place at the Vancouver Showcase.
Gonzaga, meanwhile, broke into the Top 25 last week following a 79-73 win over then-No. 11 Stanford. The Bulldogs enter this week at 9-1 on the season with the lone loss coming against defending national champion Notre Dame at the Vancouver Challenge. They check in at No. 21 in both major polls.
Virginia Tech remains undefeated at 9-0 with votes in both major polls.
All together, the three teams that have managed to defeat the Scarlet Knights are a combined 26-3 on the 2018-19 season.
SCORING MILESTONES TO WATCH
While it was head coach C. Vivian Stringer with her 1,000th victory earlier this season, two Scarlet Knights are nearing the 1,000 milestone in scoring.
Redshirt senior forward Stasha Carey is 71 points away from joining the 1,000-point career club, while graduate student guard Sierra Calhoun is 101 points away from the milestone.
STRINGER MILESTONE NUMBERS TO REMEMBER
Rutgers head coach Stringer has compiled a 1003-405 career record entering her the 48th season of coaching and joined the elite 1,000 career victory club on November 13 in the Scarlet Knight victory over Central Connecticut State.
Stringer is the sixth NCAA women's basketball coach and fifth NCAA Division I women's basketball coach to reach the milestone victory.
In 2013, Stringer became just the seventh coach - men's or women's - to reach the 900-win mark.
Stringer's 35 20-win seasons are second-best in women's basketball history. Former Tennessee head coach Pat Summit leads all coaches with 36 20-win seasons.
The Naismith and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Coach is the fifth active winningest Division I coach and sixth all-time in career wins in NCAA women's basketball history.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
Thru the first nine games of the season, Rutgers ranks among the top 25 nationally in four categories.
The Scarlet Knights are among the top teams in the nation denying shots checking in this week 11th nationally in total blocks (53) and blocks per game (5.9). Additionally RU is sixth in field goal percentage defense (.319) and 10th in scoring defense (52.0).

Since the 2002-03 season, the Scarlet Knights have gone 196-46 (.810) at the RAC.
