Men’s Hoops Working to Take Down the Terps in College Park

PISCATAWAY – Rutgers (13-15, 3-12) works to win in its second straight game when it travels to Maryland (17-11, 6-9) for an 8 p.m. tip-off on Saturday at the Xfinity Center. The Terrapins are 14-2 at home this season, only suffering defeats to nationally-ranked Purdue and Michigan State. The match-up features two of the top field goal percentage defenses in the Big Ten. Rutgers is 3rd in the league and 24th nationally in the category, limiting opponents to 40.3% shooting, while the Terps are fourth in the Big Ten and 34th in the nation (40.8).

Rutgers is also 11th nationally in offensive rebounding (13.64), 15th in scoring defense (63.7) and 19th in rebounding (39.75). The Scarlet Knights have the third most difficult conference schedule in the Big Ten and are 15th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency according to Ken Pom analysis.

The game will be televised live on BTN with Brandon Gaudin calling the action and former Rutgers head coach Bob Wenzel providing the commentary. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.

It will mark the 12th meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Maryland dating back to 1940, with the Terrapins holding an 8-3 advantage. Maryland has won six straight in the series, including both match-ups last season. RU is 1-4 on UM's home floor, with the win coming by a 50-45 score on Feb. 19, 1941. The last RU win in the series was a 95-79 victory at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson on Dec. 28, 1991, under Wenzel. Corey Sanders is averaging 12.3 points in three career games against the Terps, while shooting 50% (5-of-10) from behind the arc.

Rutgers scored 32 of the game's final 45 points to overcome a double-digit deficit in a 67-58 overtime defeat of Northwestern Tuesday evening at the RAC. Sanders shot 11-of-22 to register 30 points for the Scarlet Knights, who limited the Wildcats to a 23.5 percent (8-of-34) field goal percentage over the contest's final 25 minutes. Sanders forced the extra stanza via a 26-foot, 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds on the clock. The Scarlet Knights assumed their first and final lead when Issa Thiam deposited a triple from the left wing with 2:15 remaining in overtime. The sophomore's 3-pointer ignited an 11-0 run for the home squad the close the contest. Thiam joined Sanders in double digits with 10 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Eugene Omoruyi and Mike Williams, both in their second game back in the lineup after missing time due to injury, each contributed eight points off the bench. Omoruyi supplemented his effort with a team-best 10 rebounds.

Under seventh-year head coach Mark Turgeon, Maryland is shooting 48.1% overall and 38.8% from behind the arc. The Terrapins are coming off a 70-66 loss at Nebraska on Tuesday night. Anthony Cowan and Kevin Hunter are averaging 15.9 and 14.7 points-per-game, respectively, to pace the offense. Cowen has played a total of 1,032 minutes in 2017-18, the highest total among all D-I players. Ten different Terps have scored in double figures this season. Maryland has out-rebounded opponents in 20 of its 28 games, averaging 36.5 rebounds-per-contest, to produce a rebounding margin of +5.3, which ranks 41st nationally.
