Men’s Hoops Seeks Initial Program Victory over Indiana

PISCATAWAY – Rutgers (12-13, 2-10) plays its third of three conference games on a one-day turnaround this season when it welcomes five time national champion Indiana (12-12, 5-7) to the RAC on Monday for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Both squads will be seeking a return to the win column after close losses to top five-ranked opponents. The Scarlet Knights will be working to earn their initial victory over the Hoosiers in program history.

The first 500 fans in attendance will receive complimentary Scarlet Knight socks. One Rutgers student will have an opportunity to win $10,000 by making a half-court shot during a second half media timeout, and a Fraternity Stomp Dance will take place at halftime.

The game will be televised live on BTN with Brandon Gaudin calling the action and Robbie Hummel providing the commentary. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius/XM 83. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.

The contest will mark the sixth meeting between RU and IU dating back to 1980, with the Hoosiers winning the prior five match-ups, including both at the RAC. Last season, Rutgers out-rebounded Indiana 38-29, but dropped a 76-57 decision at Assembly Hall. Seventeen points from Corey Sanders was not enough to overcome 21 miscues, which resulted in a 33-10 advantage in points off turnovers and a 21-2 buffer in fast break points for the Hoosiers. Sanders is averaging 17.0 points while shooting 44.4% (4-of-9) from behind the arc in two career games against IU.

Rutgers fought back from a 15-point deficit to draw to within one point on multiple occasions, but could not complete the comeback, in a 78-76 loss to No. 3 Purdue Saturday at a sold-out RAC. Sanders scored a season-high 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds to spark the Scarlet Knights' 48.4 (31-of-64) FG%, including a 50% (6-of-12) mark from behind the arc. RU established a 37-25 rebounding advantage. As a result, the home squad out-scored the visitors 36-26 in the paint and 14-4 in second chance points. Despite the disparity on the boards, the Scarlet Knights could not overcome the difference at the free throw line, where the visitors had 19 more attempts and scored 17 more points. Purdue, which entered the contest ranked third nationally in 3-point FG% (43.2), was limited to 33.3% (7-of-21) from behind the arc.

Under first-year head coach Archie Miller, Indiana grabbed 25 offensive boards to out-rebound No. 5 Michigan State 53-29, but suffered a 63-60 home loss on Saturday. The Hoosiers shot just 28.8% (19-66) in the defeat. IU junior forward Juwan Morgan scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. In his last five games, Morgan is averaging 23.0 points and 7.6 rebounds, while shooting 59.0 percent (46-of-78).
