Senior diver becomes first-ever 1-meter All-American in program history
COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 15, 2018) – Senior Addison Walkowiak has become the 22nd All-American in Rutgers women's swimming and diving history with her 11th place finish in 1-meter diving on Thursday at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Walkowiak becomes the first Scarlet Knight in program history to earn All-America accolades on the 1-meter boards. She finished third in the consolation final on Thursday afternoon at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Center with 301.75 points, which placed her 11th overall at nationals. The Top 16 moved on from preliminaries, with places 9-16 clinching All-America honorable mention status. Walkowiak came agonizingly close to qualifying for a championship finals appearance with a Top 8 finish in the prelims, but she tied for 10th at 294.60, just 0.95 points away from eighth place.
"I am thrilled that I finished in the Top 16," Walkowiak said. "I have been working toward this goal since I first arrived at Rutgers, so I am over the moon to have finally accomplished my goal."
This marks the third straight year – and fourth out of the last five – head diving coach Frederick Woodruff has guided a Scarlet Knight to an All-America honorable mention. Alyssa Black earned the distinction on the 3-meter boards in each of the last two seasons, while Nicole Scott took home national honors in 2014 on the platform.
Walkowiak still has two events left on her NCAA Championships slate, taking on the 3-meter on Friday and the platform on Saturday.
Junior Rachel Byrne placed 40th in the nation with her score of 254.15. She will also return to action on Saturday in the platform diving competition.
In the lanes, freshman Sveva Schiazzano made her NCAA Championships debut on Thursday morning in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle. The Rutgers rookie turned in a time of 4:48.24 and placed 61st in the NCAA. Schiazzano will return on Saturday in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Junior Francesca Stoppa joins the party on Friday for the 100-yard butterfly prelims beginning after 11 a.m. from Columbus.
