Senior Reflections: Libby Groden
Mar 16 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers gymnastics is set to host a Big Five meet on Saturday at the RAC. It will be the final home meet for senior Libby Groden, who is one of the most decorated student-athletes to come through the program.
From Abbottstown, Pennsylvania, Groden has competed 45 times for the Scarlet Knights, holding a career high of 9.875 on floor exercise, 9.850 on balance beam, 9.850 on uneven bars, 9.825 on vault and 39.075 all-around. She has been to NCAA Regionals as an all-arounder three times and became the first gymnast in the program to earn All-Big Ten status last year.
Her top gymnastics accolade happened earlier this season when she was named one of 14 national semifinalists for the AAI Award, the top honor in the sport.
In the classroom, Groden is a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-America pick by posting a GPA of 3.857 so far. She will earn her degree in May as a visual arts major with a concentration in graphic design, adding an art history minor.
"Libby leads by example in the gym and out of the gym," head coach Louis Levine said. "She is an extremely hard worker that is very dedicated to whatever it is that she is doing."
Here is Groden in her own words on her career…
On being at Rutgers: "I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. God brought me here for a reason and I was able to make great friends and had a lot of great opportunities. I wouldn't have changed anything."
On being part of the team: "What you learn most from college gymnastics, and being on a team in general, is being a team player. That's something that's not necessarily so important in club or high school. You really learn in college to be selfless and do things for the team."
On highlights: "Definitely hosting Big Tens last year. That was awesome. We were on podium and it was a really big event. I'm excited for Big Fives this season."
On the future: "I hope to finish out the season healthy and strong, and do that as a team. I'm really excited about the future of this team and my future too, and the next chapter of not being an athlete anymore. I've been studying graphic design and hope to get a job with that."
