Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 15 Men’s Lacrosse Earns Road Win at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 15 Rutgers men's lacrosse (4-1) earned a well-deserved win on the road on a very windy day in Rhode Island, downing Brown (1-2) by a score of 10-8. Rutgers rallied from a 4-1 deficit to finish the game on a 9-4 streak from there to ensure the win. Rutgers got balanced scoring on the day, with Heningburg leading the team with five points (two goals and three assists). Kieran Mullins, Casey Rose and Christian Mazzone each had two goals.

Sophomore Owen Mead and freshman Ryan Gallagher each had one tally. Max Edelmann made eight saves to backstop the win. Kyle Pless, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, led RU with three caused turnovers. Joe Francisco, who took every faceoff, led the way with six ground balls.

Shots were even on the day at 39-39, yet Rutgers had a 30-13 advantage in shots on goal. Brown goalkeeper Phil Goss made 20 saves to prevent RU from running the score higher. Rutgers also held advantages in ground balls (31-28), faceoffs won (11-10) and were 18-of-22 on clears.

"This was a great win for our team," head coach Brian Brecht exclaimed. "They played hard and competed for the last 53 minutes of the game today. I was very pleased and excited with the play of Christian Scarpello and Mark Christiano in the midfield, and our defense did great today. Jules Heningburg and Christian Mazzone were excellent today in the clutch. This was a great team win for us on the road against a talented team. With all the distractions, and the excuses they could have made with our eight hour bus trip, they were very businesslike on the field today. I am very proud of the team today!"

Rutgers started the game the right way, as Casey Rose scored less than a minute into the game. Brown answered back with a man-down goal, starting a 4-0 scoring run to take a 4-1 advantage.

Rutgers called timeout and regrouped with a better sequence of play, completely flipping the script on the game. RU outworked the Bears for ground balls, using that to add another goal, as off a scramble RU got the ball to Mullins for a goal. Carrying that momentum into the second quarter, RU made it a three-goal run to tie the game at 4-4.

Brown scored next, but Rutgers continued to put the pedal down. The Scarlet Knights scored the next three goals, outscoring the home team 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead at halftime. The visitors had tons of momentum at half, with a 19-8 lead in shots on goal and 15-9 advantage in ground balls. Only 12 saves from Brown goalie Phil Goss kept the margin from being wider.

Brown got the first goal of the third quarter to get back within one at 7-6. It was a long scoring drought for RU, as after the Bears led 4-1 at 6:33 of the first, they scored only once in the next 26 minutes.

Rutgers answered with a goal from Christian Mazzone, his second of the day. That goal was the only RU tally of a low-scoring third quarter, after which Rutgers led 8-6.

Brown got back within one, but RU had a huge answer, as freshman Ryan Gallagher scored with the shot clock winding down to make it a 9-7 lead with 7:35 to play.

Mullins added a goal with 5 minutes to play for a three-goal lead. Brown had a late tally to make the lead two goals with two minutes to play, but it was too little, too late as the visitors brought home the win.

Jules Heningburg has now had at least four points in every game this year. He leads RU in goals (13), assists (13) and points (26).

The win is the second straight over Brown, a 2016 Final Four Team. Last season, RU won 13-11 in Piscataway.

The Scarlet Knights are back on the road next week for another matchup against an Ivy League foe. The team will take a ride 30 minutes south to battle in-state rival Princeton, a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday.
