No. 13 Men's Lacrosse At Rival Princeton Saturday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – An annual in-state rivalry moves to the weekend, as No. 13 Rutgers men's lacrosse travels south to take on Princeton Saturday at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights (4-1) will renew the longest running series in program history at Princeton's Sherrerd Field. The game will be broadcast by the Ivy League Network.

The two squads will meet for the 96th time lifetime, with the Tigers leading the all-time series 61-30-3. Last season, RU earned its first win over Princeton since 2005 with a 16-11 victory. In that game, Jules Heningburg had seven points (two goals, five assists), while returners Kieran Mullins (four goals), Chad Toliver (three goals) and Casey Rose (two goals) all tallied multiple times. Max Edelmann made 14 saves in that game. The squads play for the Meistrell Cup, named in honor of U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Famer Harland (Tots) Meistrell, who restarted the lacrosse programs at both schools in the early 1920s.

"I'm reminded every day how much this rivalry means to our alumni," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Having lacrosse here for over 100 years, playing them for 96 of those years, that's great tradition. Embracing that tradition is one of the greatest things about being a collegiate athlete, and this is certainly something that we are very excited about, honored to play in. We certainly want to play well on Saturday to both represent our alumni with pride, and take care of this 2018 team and seniors, competing our hardest for 60 minutes on game day in this local rivalry."

Rutgers has started the season 4-1, with just a road loss at No. 12 Army. Last week, in the first of two straight road games against Ivy League foes, RU defeated Brown 10-8 behind two goals and three assists from Jules Heningburg. A Tewaaraton Award Watch List member, Heningburg leads the team with 13 goals, 13 assists and 26 points, ranking second in the Big Ten in assists in points. A co-captain, senior midfielder Christian Mazzone is second on the team with eight goals five assists and 13 points.

Defensively, Rutgers leads the conference in scoring defense and is top-10 nationally. Senior goalkeeper Max Edelmann has a 7.80 goals-against-average and a save percentage of 55.2.

Princeton, who is receiving votes in this week's polls, is 2-2 on the season. Fellow NJ school Monmouth pushed them to double-overtime in the opener, before taking road losses at ranked teams in Virginia (18-15) and Johns Hopkins (16-9). The Tigers downed NJIT Tuesday night, 15-8.

2017 All-American Michael Sowers leads the team with eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points, which ranks sixth in the nation. Two-time Second Team All-Ivy League selection has six goals and 10 points this season. Goalie Tyler Blaisdell, a first-team All-Ivy selection last year, has a save percentage of 49.5 and goals-against-average of 12.25. The team is third in the nation with 34.75 ground balls per game.
