PISCATAWAY - Women's golf takes flight for the Aloha State over Spring Break to play in the 33rd Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, March 13-14, at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights will compete with multiple nationally-ranked programs at the tournament, which will take place on Marines Corps Base Hawai'i on the windward side of the island of O'ahu.
Senior captain and Big Ten Golfer of the Week Emily Mills, sophomores Carrie-Ann Lee and Ana Cortes, and freshmen Harriet Allsebrook and Lori Char will comprise the competing five in RU's third event of the spring season. Senior Tatum Jackson and juniors Ashleigh Greenham and Astrid Aneman will play individually on the par 72, 6,099-yard course.
Five of the 13 teams competing in the Invitational, hosted by Hawaii, are ranked in the Golfweek Top 50, including No. 7 Texas, No. 13 Oklahoma State and No. 25. No. 39 Texas A&M is the defending tournament champion. No. 49 Pepperdine, Colorado State, Washington State, Hawai'i-Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific, Osaka Gakuin (Japan) and UTEP join the Scarlet Knights in the field.
Mills carded a four-under par 212 (76-69-67) to win the 83-player River Landing Classic, played March 5-6 on the River Course at River Landing in Wallace, N.C. The Colts Neck (N.J.) native helped the Scarlet Knights tie for sixth place in the 14-team field with an 887 (304-296-287) total. RU's third-round 287 tied for the best round in program history with the second round of this past fall's Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and the first round of the 2016 Big Ten Championship.
The Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course is known for its majestic views of the Ko'olau Mountain Range and the raging surf of the Pacific Ocean. The course rating is 71 and it has a slope rating of 130 on Bermuda grass. The course was designed by William P. Bell, ASGCA, and opened in 1939. The Klipper was President Barack Obama's favorite course during his annual holiday trips to his home state.
Thirty-six holes will be played on Tuesday, with an additional 18 to be contested on Wednesday. Each day's competition will begin via an 8 a.m. shotgun start local time. Live scoring is available via golfstat.
