PISCATAWAY - Women's golf travels to Maineville, Ohio, this weekend to compete in the 2018 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at TPC River's Bend. Fourteen of the top 20 individual finishers from last season's Championships return to boost a 14-team field consisting of six programs ranked among the Golfweek Top 50.
"Ohio State was a great test for us leading into Big Ten's," said head coach Kari Williams. "The course was long and challenging, which is what we expect from TPC River's Bend again this year. This spring season has prepared our team to compete with some of the top teams in our conference and the country."
Senior Emily Mills, redshirt junior Ashleigh Greenham, sophomores Ana Cortes and Carrie-Ann Lee, and freshmen Harriet Allsebrook and Lori Char comprise the travel party. All six will compete, with the top four scores counting towards the team scorecard on the par 72, 6,357-yard course.
"This lineup has gained experience and confidence with each event we have played in, learning from the course set up, weather conditions, and how to better manage their play," said Williams. "They have played well for stretches during rounds and it is now time to bring it all together for one complete tournament performance. We are all really looking forward to competing this weekend at the Big Ten Championships."
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 12th place finish with a 620 (310-310) total at last weekend's Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, which was shortened to 36 holes due to rain. Mills led RU for the fifth time in as many spring events with a 148 (72-76) to tie for 13th in the 86-player field.
Named by Golf Digest among the "Top 10 Best New Private Clubs in the U.S." after it opened in 2001, Arnold Palmer-designed TPC River's Bend hosts the Championships for the second consecutive season. Recognized annually as one of Ohio's Best Courses in State by Golf Digest, TPC River's Bend has previously hosted the Web.com Tour's Chiquita Classic, the PGA TOUR Champions Kroger Classic, and the Junior PGA Championship.
Michigan State won the 2017 Championship with a two-over par 866 (298-283-285) total. The Spartans were followed by Northwestern (2nd, 868), Ohio State (3rd, 877), Wisconsin (4th, 884) and Michigan (5th, 892). Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet returns to defend her individual title after carding a 210 (69-71-70) last year.
Mills carded a 226 (74-79-73) to lead RU, while placing 23rd in the 83-player field, at last season's Championships. She had 31 pars, seven birdies and an eagle to earn her second consecutive top 25 finish at the event, after placing tied for 12th with a 214 (67-72-75) as a sophomore in 2016.
The Championships begin Friday, with first-round action starting at 8:30 a.m. ET. Saturday's second round will also tee off at 8:30 a.m., while Sunday's third round will begin at 8 a.m. Live stats will be available via Golfstat. BTN will debut coverage of the 2018 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships on Monday, April 30, at 5 p.m. ET.
