MAINEVILLE, Ohio - Women's golf placed 14th with a 914 (312-301-301) total at the 2018 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships, played Friday through Sunday at TPC River's Bend. Senior co-captain Emily Mills concluded her collegiate career in convincing fashion, carding her second straight 73 to lead the team with a 227 (81-73-73) total.
"I was happy with the way I played in rounds two and three," said Mills. "It was great to finish off the spring on a high note. It's bittersweet for my career at Rutgers to end, but it has been a fun four years."
Mills, who led the Scarlet Knights in all six events this spring, placed tied for 46th in the 84-player field. A three-time team captain and the program's career leader in scoring average, birdies and par or better rounds, she had seven birdies and 33 pars. The Big Ten's female recipient of the prestigious Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship with a 3.958 GPA as a neuroscience and cell biology major, the Colts Neck native will attend medical school this upcoming fall.
"Emily's career was one for the record books," said head coach Kari Williams. "She helped us set a new standard for Rutgers golf and challenged her teammates to compete at a higher level at every practice and tournament."
With two freshmen and two sophomores in the lineup, the Scarlet Knights counted 32 birdies and 147 pars against a field consisting of six programs ranked among the Golfweek Top 50. Fourteen of the top 20 individual finishers from last season's Championships returned to compete.
Freshman Harriet Allsebrook (76-75-79) and sophomore Carrie-Ann Lee (76-78-76) tied for 57th with 230 totals on the Arnold Palmer-designed course. Co-captain Ashleigh Greenham was a stroke behind, tied for 60th with a 231 (79-75-77). Lee was minus three on par five holes, while Allsebrook and Greenham had nine and eight birdies, respectively.
Sophomore Ana Cortes and freshman Lori Char rounded-out the scorecard. Cortes tied for 70th with a 235 (82-78-75) and Char was 82nd with a 247 (86-82-79).
"While it is not the result we had hoped for heading into the weekend, we have a lot of positives to take away from the Big Ten Championships," said Williams. "Emily posted another 73 to lead the team for the event. Carrie-Ann, Ana, and Ash all significantly improved on their scores from last year. Harriet and Lori both learned a lot after playing this course for the first time and will rely on this experience come next year's Championships."
Michigan State claimed the title with five-under par 859 (283-286-290) total. The Spartans, who won their eighth Big Ten Championship, earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Maryland and Illinois tied for second place (863), while Northwestern and Ohio State tied for third (865).
Ohio State's Jaclyn Lee won the individual title, shooting a nine-under par 207 (66-68-73) and tying the championship record for lowest 54-hole score. With the win, she receives an exemption into the Symetra Tour's first-ever Prasco Charity Championship to be held at TPC River's Bend June 29-July 1.
The Championships signaled the 11th and final event of the 2017-18 season for the Scarlet Knights.
"Each player is heading into the summer with specific aspects of their game to develop and practice to prepare for our competitive schedule next fall," Williams said.
