NCAA REGIONALS AT PENN STATE
April 7, 2018 • 4 p.m. ET
Rec Hall • University Park, Pa.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Seniors Libby Groden (all-around) and Makenzey Shank (balance beam) are both set to compete at the NCAA Regional hosted by Penn State on Saturday at 4 p.m. BTN Plus will have a dedicated stream for each of the four events, with live results also available.
Friday Update: Huang will also compete as an all-arounder
"I expect Libby and Micki to go out there and do what they have consistently done throughout their careers," head coach Louis Levine said. "They are capable of making that next step if they hit their routines and compete to their potential. There is no pressure. You just go out there, put your best foot forward and whatever happens, happens. I'm excited for them. It is never fun to go without a team, but these girls have really proven throughout their careers that they deserve to be at this level."
Groden is set to become the first RU gymnast to appear at four NCAA Regionals in as many seasons. She will rotate with West Virginia and start with a bye before moving to uneven bars, balance beam, bye, floor exercise and vault, the same order as last year. It will be her 48th career meet as a Scarlet Knight, as Groden posted a 39.050 at NCAA Regionals last season with a high of 9.825 on floor exercise.
The Pennsylvania native earned a 38.850 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) in six all-around meets as a senior, holding a high of 38.950 at the Big Five meet on March 17. One of 14 national semifinalists for the prestigious AAI Award, Groden holds career highs of 9.875 on floor exercise, 9.875 on balance beam, 9.850 on uneven bars, 9.825 on vault and 39.075 all-around.
Shank will make her first appearance at NCAA Regionals and compete on balance beam in the second rotation. She totaled a 9.855 RQS in 11 outings, reaching 9.800 or better on eight occasions. That was highlighted by a 9.925 to tie the school record on Feb. 24 at the RAC. The mark had not been obtained since 2004 and earned Shank Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week, the first weekly honor for the Scarlet Knights since joining the conference.
Overall, the Arizona native has competed 38 previous times for Rutgers with a combined 36 routines of 9.800 or better across balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise.
Both Groden (visual arts) and Shank (journalism and media studies) were named Academic All-Big Ten last month.
