PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers forward Ethan Vanacore-Decker has signed with the Swope Park Rangers, it was announced by the United Soccer League club affiliated with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer.
The Scarlet Knight, who graduated last December with a degree in Labor Studies, was picked up by the club after playing this summer with the Premier Development League's North County United in Palm Beach, Florida.
"One of the coaches down there, we connected really well, and I told him my story that I had gotten hurt and I was looking for a team and that I back playing," said Vanacore-Decker. "He got me in contact with (Swope Park) and I had a trial for a week. A week later they called and said they wanted to sign me."
Vanacore-Decker had figured to be a prominent part of the Scarlet Knights' offense in 2017 and showcased his potential standout power with two goals and an assist in an early season nonconference contest at Oral Roberts.
Seven games into his final collegiate season, however, the Manahawkin, New Jersey native was sidelined after a shoulder injury in a Big Ten matchup with Ohio State.
The comeback started with rehabilitation at Rutgers, continued with daily gym workouts to keep up fitness levels and eventually down to Florida where Vanacore-Decker has played with the last three summers with the North County United and South Florida Surf.
Vanacore-Decker's background also helped him to the next level.
Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Vanacore-Decker represented the United States with the U15 and U20 national teams. A New York Red Bulls Academy product, Vanacore-Decker led the Red Bulls U-17/18's to the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy championship with goals in each of the team's final three games. Additionally, Vanacore-Decker was featured for the Red Bulls in the MLS Reserve League and appeared for the first team in a preseason victory over the Columbus Crew SC in 2013.
"Getting comfortable with the guys (at Swope Park) and getting back to where I was playing last year before the season are my short term goals," said Vanacore-Decker of the future. "Long terms goals are hopefully where something happens that I can get a contract with the MLS and that would be pretty cool obviously."
For the future Scarlet Knights looking to sign a pro contract following their time "On The Banks", Vanacaore-Decker noted, "Every situation is different. I would say the determination to do it, if you really want to do it, then you have to put in a lot of work.
Also never give up, because I could have easily given up. I knew I had it in me and I needed someone to see me at the right time at the right point. I'm happy this all happened."
