New Basketball Court Projects State Pride
Aug 27 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – An outline of the State of New Jersey is displayed prominently at center court, along with Block R spirit mark, on the newly-installed hardwood at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The illustration serves to project the pride that the Scarlet Knights have in representing The State University of New Jersey.
"We've put the map of New Jersey front-and-center on our basketball court," said Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs. "We're 'Jersey' and we are very proud of being 'Jersey.' We now have one of the most identifiable floors in the country."
The new design features both light and dark wood stains to define court sections and provide a more pronounced look. Installation of 18,000 square feet of maple required 115,000 floor cleats (nails) and 40,000 staples. To complete the surface, 16 gallons of paint (approximately 12 of Rutgers Red) and 150 gallons of finish were applied.
"We are The State University of New Jersey and our court now reflects that," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Steve Pikiell.
Rutgers will have home-and-home match-ups with Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State and Penn State during its expanded 20-game Big Ten slate. The Scarlet Knights will also welcome Michigan in its conference opener, Maryland, and Nebraska to the RAC. On the road in league play, Rutgers will travel to Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin.
In non-conference action, The Scarlet Knights host St. John's in the Gavitt Tip-Off, as well as regional foes Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson and Columbia, during a 10-game non-league slate that includes road games at Miami (ACC/Big Ten Challenge), Fordham and Seton Hall (Garden State Hardwood Classic).
