Rutgers Head Coach Chris Ash
Opening Statement:Â "To start, I feel really bad for our players. We've got a bunch of really good kids in that locker room that are hurting, and rightfully so. They've worked really hard to help improve our football team and they work really hard to try to come out and play the best that they can play, and it didn't happen. Whenever you have six turnovers in a game and give up over 400 yards rushing, it's really tough to win football games. We need to find a way to get better. We need to go back and evaluate everything that we're doing, who we're doing it with, and find a way to keep improving during the week and working really hard to play the best game that we can play on Saturday. Some of the things we did today are just not going to win games. Good teams run the ball, stop the run. They protect the ball, they take it away, and when you look at the stats today, we just did not do that."
On the direction of the team:Â "We just need to keep working to get better. Nobody said this was going to be easy. Nobody said it was going to happen overnight. We just have a lot of young players that are playing right now. We just gotta keep getting those guys as good as they can [be], as fast as we can. We need to love them up, we need to keep pushing them, keep practicing and getting better. "
On the team's strategy to stop Pooka Williams Jr.:Â "It's a couple things. It's gap integrity. We need to have good gap integrity; we need to get off blocks and we need to tackle him. That's really what you need to do to stop the run. Again, when we wore down in the second half because of our depth, our tackling became an issue. He broke some tackles and made some guys miss. He's a good player. Our fundamentals suffered. When you do that, it's going to be tough to stop the run."
On the Rutgers blocked field goal:Â "Everything was crushing out there today. It's not just that. Again, we started off tough on offense, we started to turn the ball over. Defensively I thought we were fighting, I thought that was a big play in the game-to be able to get a blocked field goal, scoop it up and go score. I was hoping that brought some life and energy to the sideline. It did for a little bit, but we turned around and gave one right back up. That's just the way the day went."
Rutgers Offensive Lineman Jonah Jackson
On the message in the locker room:Â "We have to keep moving forward. It's only the third game and we have nine more left. We just have to get ready to go back to work."
On what do you tell your teammates after a game like this:Â "Obviously, its a tough situation no matter what you tell somebody. We just have to keep our heads up and get ready for Buffalo next week."
Senior Linebacker Deonte Roberts
On what coaches message was:Â "Keep fighting. We have to come back tomorrow and get back to the drawing board."
On the loss:Â "You never was to lose like that. Its a learning lesson, I guess. Correct our mistakes from the game before next week. Our opponents are going to try to do what Kansas did. We have to be better next week. It's football, games like these happen. We just have to make sure we are ready for next week."
Redshirt Senior Cornerback Isaiah Wharton
On the message in the locker room:Â "We just have to get back to work tomorrow. Watch the film and clean it up for Buffalo next week."
On the QB change:Â "Our coaches did a really good job of preparing us for both quarterbacks. We knew that Miles Kendrick could run and that Peyton Bender could throw."
