PISCATAWAY – Women's golf travels to University Park to compete in the Nittany Lion Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, on the Penn State Blue Course. After starting its fall campaign by competing in two new events, the Scarlet Knights will make their fourth consecutive appearance at the tournament which dates back to 1975.
"It's exciting to head back to Penn State, because our team has seen the course a few times," said head coach Kari Williams. "This gives us some confidence heading into the weekend. Our goal is to compete hard from start to finish for every round and to shoot the scores we know we are capable of."
Freshman Maeve Rossi, sophomore Harriet Allsebrook, graduate co-captain Ashleigh Greenham, junior Carrie-Ann Lee and senior Astrid Aneman will compete for Rutgers in the third tournament of its five fall tournaments.
The Scarlet Knights, Akron, Bucknell, Georgetown, High Point, Ohio, Penn State, Pennsylvania, Rollins, Santa Clara, Seton Hall, Navy, Washington, Xavier, Yale and Youngstown comprise the 16-team field. The Nittany Lions will work to reclaim the title that they won in both 2015 and 2016, before Maryland won the event last year.
Rutgers placed fifth with an 894 (298-301-295) total at the 14-team Invitational last season. Three Scarlet Knights placed among the top 20, including Lee. Competing individually, she was minus three on par fives with seven birdies to finish tied for 20th with a 224 (78-72-74).
Rossi will play in first position for the third time in as many tournaments. She has paced RU in both events thus far. At last weekend's Mary Fossum Invitational at Michigan State, Rossi carded a six-over 222 (76-72-74) to place tied for 24th in the 90-player field. She had 31 pars and 10 birdies against a field that featured four top 30-ranked programs and seven teams that earned berths to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Thirty-six holes are scheduled for day one, with an additional 18 slated for Sunday on the par 72, 6,322-yard course. Play will begin via a 9 a.m. shotgun start on both days. Live results will be available via Golfstat.
