IOWA CITY, Iowa – Rutgers gymnastics scored best on vault for the third time in four weeks, posting a 191.625 overall Saturday at Iowa. The host Hawkeyes picked up a 194.575 in the Big Ten dual meet.
"We aren't disappointed with our performance today," head coach
Umme Salim-Beasley said. "We were disappointed with scores that were coming up, but that is something that we have no control over. We can only control our performances.
"We started off strong on bars, hitting 7-for-7 with an exhibition. Then moving to vault, we had a lot of energy and some powerful vaults. The scores on both events were a tenth to two tenths lower than we would have expected them to be. Floor, the energy level was pretty good. We did have a few little mistakes as far as skills that we weren't able to complete which should have been in the routine. That affected our start values. We finished on beam with some routines that stayed on the beam, but there were some issues with connections. That was something we worked on, but some of the routines were hesitant. Our focus moving forward is hitting the connections and getting the bonus combinations that we need to get."
Beginning the meet on uneven bars, the Scarlet Knights totaled a 47.900. Junior
Shannon Farrell had a team-high 9.700 from the anchor position.
The vault lineup produced a 48.400 in the second rotation. Junior
Kaitlyn Hall tied for the meet high by earning a 9.750, her second first-place finish on the event through four weeks this season. Sophomores
Belle Huang and
Toni Williams both added a 9.700.
Huang recorded a 9.750 to help the team to a 47.750 on floor exercise, as RU wrapped up with a 47.575 on balance beam.
In the all-around, Huang (38.600) and senior
Michelle Amoresano (38.075) were the only two gymnasts in the meet to take part in all four events.
Rutgers will compete at home the next two weekends at the RAC, starting Feb. 2 versus Maryland. Action is set to start at 3 p.m. and admission is free.
