Student-athletes combine for a 3.12 GPA and 216 Dean’s List selections
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2019) – Rutgers University student-athletes posted all-time high marks in the classroom during the fall 2018 semester.
Scarlet Knights from all 24 NCAA intercollegiate programs combined to earn a 3.12 cumulative grade-point average, a 3.11 term GPA and 216 Dean's List selections, all of which are all-time high numbers for Rutgers Athletics.
"We are certainly proud of our student-athletes' commitment to academic excellence," said Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes Scott Walker. "The fall semester GPA and the unprecedented number of Dean's List students is a combination of setting high standards, working hard and utilizing all of the support that Rutgers has to offer.
"It's also a direct result of Rutgers' donors and their impact on scholarships and academic facilities," Walker added. "They have a profound effect on our student-athletes' success and we are certainly grateful for that."
Women's golf set the gold standard. The program will accept its second straight National Girls and Women in Sports Team Academic Award this Sunday. The team achieved a department-high 3.84 GPA in the fall term, with all eligible student-athletes recognized on the Dean's List.
By the Numbers
Last February, Rutgers Athletics announced the largest gift in school history - $15 million – would serve to support the academic achievements of Rutgers' approximately 700 student-athletes via the construction of the Gary and Barbara Rodkin Center for Academic Success, which is scheduled to break ground this spring. The upcoming building will consolidate all academic support services for athletics in a single building on Busch campus.
Rutgers placed a record 85 student-athletes on the Fall Academic All-Big Ten list while setting the all-time GPA and Dean's List marks. It was also announced last fall that Rutgers Athletics' 88.2 percent overall Graduation Success Rate was the highest in five years and marked the 10th straight year with a score over 84.
Meanwhile, two of Rutgers' fall teams – women's soccer and field hockey – advanced to their respective NCAA Championship tournaments.
