Oct 21 | Men's Golf
VERO BEACH, Fla. – Junior Christopher Gotterup finished tied for fifth to highlight action for Rutgers men's golf at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate on Monday in Vero Beach, Florida. Gotterup carded an 11-under-par 205 (65-71-69) for his second consecutive top-five individual result after he captured the 2019 Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 8.
As a team, the Scarlet Knights finished ninth with a 14-under-par 850 (281-287-282) during the three-round tournament. Notre Dame captured the team title with an 821 (277-270-274), followed by South Florida (822: 268-281-273) and Memphis (824: 277-276-271). Notre Dame's Palmer Jackson won the individual title with a 16-under-par 200 (67-66-67).
"There were lots of birdies to be had out there, but we just didn't make enough," said head coach Rob Shutte. "It was a tight leaderboard throughout the tournament and we had a great bounce back with our final round. We've competed in some deep fields this fall, so the margin for error is small, but there was a lot to build off of.
Gotterup finished the tournament with 16 birdies and an eagle, as he carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round. The CBA product managed five birdies and an eagle on hole No. 3 to close out another impressive outing. Gotterup fired off a seven-under-par 65 in the opening round and followed with a one-under-par 71 in the second on Sunday.
The reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week, Gotterup is coming off his first career individual collegiate title when he claimed the Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 8 in South Bend. Gotterup is currently the No. 42 in the country, according to GolfStat.
"Chris will be the first to tell you that he is a little disappointed because of the hot start he had on Sunday," Shutte said. "For him to finish just a couple strokes behind the tournament's winner despite leaving some shots out there really show just how talented he is."
Rookie Brendan Hansen produced the best result of his freshman fall campaign with a five-under-par 211 (71-73-67) to finished tied for 28th. Hansen carded a five-under-par 67, which included six birdies during his final 18 holes of play.
Senior Tony Jiang also finished under par with his two-under-par 214 (72-72-70) to tie for 43rd. Freshman Xavier Marcoux (220: 73-71-76) and sophomore Jack Doherty (226: 73-76-77) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 61st and 73rd, respectively, while junior Putt Sridama finished tied for 53rd (218: 73-73-73) competing as an individual.
