Reigning NCAA champion looking to qualify for 2020 summer Olympic trials
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Reigning 2019 NCAA Champion Nick Suriano will take his first steps towards qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics when he competes at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Open on Saturday in New York City. Suriano will wrestle in the men's freestyle event at 57kg during the all-day tournament at the New York Athletic Club.
With a trip to the Bill Farrell 57kg final (first or second place finish), Suriano will automatically qualify for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials, held from April 4-5 in State College, Pennsylvania. Session I of the Men's Freestyle tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by medal matches at 6 p.m.
On the international stage, Suriano defeated 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Joe Colon during the 2019 "Grapple at the Garden" Beat the Streets benefit inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 6. Suriano used a single-leg takedown in the closing seconds of the match to secure the win in front of more than 5,000 fans at the World's Most Famous Arena.
Suriano is coming off an historic junior season, as the Paramus native finished 29-3 en route to both a Big Ten title and national championship at 133 pounds in 2018-19. At nationals, Suriano defeated No. 1 seed Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) in the 133-pound final, using a takedown in overtime to seal the victory.
