Dec 20 | Wrestling
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Reigning 2019 NCAA Champion Nick Suriano continues his work towards qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics when he competes at the 2019 Senior Nationals on Saturday and Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas. Suriano will wrestle in the men's freestyle event at 57 kg during the two-day event at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
With a top-five finish in his weight class, Suriano will automatically qualify for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials, held from April 4-5 in State College, Pennsylvania. Preliminaries of men's freestyle will begin on Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. ET, followed by quarterfinal matches, semifinal matches and a round of consolation bouts from 5-8 p.m. On Sunday, all remaining consolation bouts and medal matches will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The finals of each weight begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
In his last time out, Suriano finished third at the 2019 Bill Farrell Memorial International Open on Nov. 16 in New York City. Suriano went 5-1 in the loaded 57 kg field, as he defeated four-time All-American and 2016 NCAA Champion Nahshon Garrett to claim the bronze medal in his weight class.
Prior to the Farrell, Suriano defeated 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Joe Colon during the 2019 "Grapple at the Garden" Beat the Streets benefit inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 6. Suriano used a single-leg takedown in the closing seconds of the match to secure the win in front of more than 5,000 fans at the World's Most Famous Arena.
Suriano, who is currently in Olympic redshirt, is coming off an historic junior season, as the Paramus native finished 29-3 en route to both a Big Ten title and national championship at 133 pounds in 2018-19. At nationals, Suriano defeated No. 1 seed Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) in the 133-pound final, using a takedown in overtime to seal the victory.
