Scarlet Knights score best on floor exercise
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Rutgers gymnastics reached 194 for the fourth time in five weeks with a 194.100 Saturday at Michigan State. The host Spartans ended with 195.425.
"The team was very steady today," head coach Umme Salim-Beasley said. "There weren't a lot of peaks and valleys, but kept our focus from start the finish. Bars set the tone early and we built on that on vault and floor. We had to change our lineup on beam due to injury and it didn't pan out. But overall, I thought the team stayed composed throughout."
Being on the road, the Scarlet Knight opened up on uneven bars and posted a 48.600. Both senior Michelle Amoresano and junior Shannon Farrell paced the lineup with a 9.800. Farrell has reached at least that mark in each of the last three meets. In addition, junior Kaitlyn Hall recorded her second-best mark of the season on the event at 9.750, with sophomore Emily Drauss adding a 9.675 to the team number.
RU used five scores of 9.700 or better on vault, the event with the best average heading into the day. Amoresano and senior Jenna Rizkalla, who was in the lineup for the first time this season, were part of a six-way tie for first place at 9.775. Sophomore Belle Huang and senior Riahanah Ali followed closely behind with a 9.750. Hall contributed a 9.700 to round out the rotation.
Ali shined on floor exercise in her home state by impressing to a 9.850. Huang and Rizkalla both worked to a 9.800, with sophomore Toni Williams achieving a 9.725 to push the Scarlet Knights up to 48.775.
Huang notched her second 9.800 on balance beam, as the team totaled a 47.975 to finish the meet.
