Softball Blanks Morgan State in Five

Wingert gets five RBIs in run-rule victory

HARRISONBURG, Va. (March 16, 2019) – Rutgers softball (14-10) scored an 8-0 run-rule, shutout victory over Morgan State (6-13) on Saturday afternoon at the James Madison Invitational inside Veterans Memorial Park.
 
QUICK PITCH
  • Freshman Katie Wingert racked up five RBIs, three of which came from her fourth home run in five games, and freshman Corah Price allowed three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts to complete her second shutout of the year. The offense was clutch throughout with seven of its eight RBIs coming with two outs.


STANDOUT STATS
  • Wingert got three RBIs from her one hit during a 1-for-2 game, her seventh home run of the year. She added a sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded for RBIs four and five.
  • Senior center fielder Nicolette Anico batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Senior shortstop Jess Hughes had a single and three walks, including two intentional.
  • Freshman second baseman Aleah Marra was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while sophomore first baseman Madyson Cole drove in a pair while going 1-for-2.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Scarlet Knights jumped on Bears pitching early with four runs on three hits and an error. Wingert's sac fly started it off, followed by Marra's RBI single and Cole's two-run single both with two outs.
  • Following Hughes' single and Anyssa Iliopoulos' hit by pitch, Wingert came up with two outs and launched a home run to left field for the 7-0 lead.
  • Price allowed a leadoff single in the third, then struck out the side.
  • Christine Malito was hit by a pitch to start the fifth, followed by a brilliant bunt single off the bat of senior left fielder Adriana Burcar. Hughes was intentionally thrown ball four to load the bases after starting off the at-bat with a 3-1 count. Morgan state got a couple of clutch popouts to record two outs before hitting Wingert with the bases loaded to end the game on run-rule.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers batted 6-for-10 with two outs against them on the day.
  • The Scarlet Knights have five run-rule victories, including four of their last six wins.
  • RU scored in the first inning for the 12th time this season, going 9-3 in those games. RU also improves to 12-4 when scoring first.
  • Rutgers successfully stole three bases to run its season total to 43. They are 88 percent in stolen base success. Rutgers' best mark in the last 15 years is 87 percent from the 2011 season.
  • Rutgers improves to 2-0 all-time against the Bears, with the only other win coming in 2003.
