Edelmann Excels Between the Pipes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse goalkeeper Max Edelmann was granted good news over the summer, when the NCAA granted a waiver, giving him an extra year of eligibility. After participating in Senior Day last April, Edelmann changed his plans to come back for one more year 'On the Banks'. After completing a three-month summer internship with IBM, Edelmann returned to campus to begin graduate school and prepare for his final collegiate season.
The Middletown, Md. native was named a team captain for his final campaign, and he settled into a role as one of the team leaders. He provides a positive influence in the locker room, where he has also been recognized as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award for his overall resume.
Edelmann's return to game action was briefly put on hold at the start of the season, as he missed the first two games due to an injury. He returned with a vengeance, setting a new career-high with 17 saves against Army in his first game back. After making 12 saves against the nation's top ranked team in Loyola, Edelmann backstopped the Scarlet Knights to an 8-4 win Saturday at Fairfield.
In a lower-scoring defensive battle, Edelmann's play between the pipes stood out as he tied that career-high by again making 17 saves while allowing just four goals, the lowest total scored by any Division I team last week. The four goals allowed was the lowest surrendered by Rutgers since 2017 (a span of 30 games). He held Fairfield without a goal for a 27-minute span from the second quarter to the fourth quarter
"Max is certainly a big part of our success when he's back there making saves and organizing the team," head coach Brian Brecht said. "He's been a leader for us. He had two great performances in his first two games in setbacks, then against Fairfield his performance continued to be outstanding. He's been great for us since his return, and I expect that throughout the season."
For the season, Edelmann leads the Big Ten and is second in the NCAA with a save percentage of 63%. He is eighth in the NCAA (2nd in Big Ten) with a goals-against average of 9.0 on the year. He has averaged 15.33 saves per game, which would rank 3rd in the NCAA and lead the Big Ten.
"It's important to make sure we're all on the same page at the same time, so continuous communication throughout the season is key," Edelmann said. "That will enable us to have success in our defense, in the clearing game, in all areas."

Having Edelmann between the pipes provides a stabilizing presence for the Scarlet Knights' defense. A vocal leader on the field, Edelmann helps keep the back end of the defense focused and structured."Who's there?
