PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 8, 2019) – Rutgers softball head coach
Kristen Butler announced today the incoming transfer of
Gabrielle Callaway to the 2020 roster. An NFCA All-South Region Second Team outfielder from the University of Alabama, Callaway will be a graduate student at Rutgers and will complete her final two years of NCAA eligibility as a Scarlet Knight.
"We're excited to bring a player of her experience and talent into our growing program," Butler said. "She'll be able to come in and make an immediate impact on our lineup. She has proven postseason experience, and her leadership in that area will make a difference in our program. She's very passionate about the game, so to add anyone with her enthusiasm is a big boost."
Callaway hit .300 in the ultra-competitive SEC as a sophomore in 2018 with 54 games played for the Crimson Tide. The left-handed slugger racked up an OPS of .811 with 10 doubles, a triple and four home runs. She drove in 32 runs, second best on a team that made the NCAA Championships Super Regional round. Alabama beat 13 ranked teams with Callaway at the heart of the batting lineup.
"I chose to play my final two years at Rutgers because of the incredible opportunity to play for Coach Butler and her staff, and be a part of the future of Rutgers softball," Callaway said. "It's the best place for me to be, both academically and professionally as I work toward a master's degree in social work."
The Mobile, Alabama native appeared in 41 games as a freshman in Tuscaloosa with 20 hits, including five doubles. Callaway attended Poway High in Poway, California while leading the team to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) title in 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2016. She graduated as a two-time All-CIF player and three-time All-Palomar League honoree.
Callaway earned an undergraduate degree in history from Alabama with three academic honor roll awards from the SEC. She will pursue a graduate degree in social work at The State University of New Jersey with a planned career as a therapist and clinical social worker.
