COLLEGE PARK, MD.  – Rutgers tennis opened Big Ten play on the road at Maryland Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights dropped a 6-1 decision to the Terrapins. 
 
RU fell to an overall mark of 6-3 and a league mark of 0-1, while UMD moved to a record of 3-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
 
DOUBLES PLAY
The Terps took a 1-0 advantage in the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
 
SINGLES PLAY
The teams would battle through some close matches in the singles competition.
 
Junior Jaci Cochrane posted a victory at the No. 4 spot, topping UMD's Amelle Sullivan, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7). Cochrane improved to 6-3 overall in singles play this season and starts conference action with a mark of 1-0. 
 
At the No. 5 spot, sophomore Isabelle Da Silva dropped a tight three-set decision to the Terps' Amber Policare. After falling, 6-4, in the first set, Kaplan rallied a 6-4 win in the second. However, Policare took the final, 10-6, for the win.
 
Overall, UMD claimed five of six singles for the victory.
 
UP NEXT
Rutgers continues Big Ten play at home with Minnesota on Friday, March 15 and Wisconsin on Sunday, March 17. Both matches will be played at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
