Budd Collects 100th-Career Point in Loss to Cornell

Scarlet Knights drop final non-conference matchup of 2019

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-8, 0-3) dropped a 15-7 result to Cornell (6-4, 2-1) on Tuesday afternoon at HighPoint.com Stadium. Junior Samantha Budd became the 24th player in program history to join the 100-point club for her career with her one goal and one assist against the Big Red.

Sophomore Taralyn Naslonski and freshman Marin Hartshorn each had two goals against Cornell, while senior Abbey Brooks and rookie Camryn Rogers both added scoring tallies. On defense, senior Regina Sharp caused a game-high three turnovers and freshman goalkeeper Kameron Halsall stopped nine shots.

Cornell used a 9-3 scoring run in the final 30 minutes of play to secure the win, as Tomasina Leska, Grace Paletta and Caroline Allen all had hat tricks.

It was a back-and-forth first half, with RU the aggressor off the first draw. Naslonski found Hartshorn for the opening goal, and Budd dumped one into Brooks to give Rutgers a 2-0 advantage four minutes into the game. Cornell responded with its first of the day, but Hartshorn weaved through a host of Big Red defenders and scored for the 3-1 lead at the 24:35 mark in the first half.

Cornell scored four consecutive goals to take its first lead of the day, but the run was stopped by Budd's unassisted strike for her 100th-career point and her 76th-career goal. The visitor added one more down the stretch to take a 6-4 advantage into the locker room.

The Big Red began to pull away out of the break, but not without a fight from Rutgers. Naslonski buried back-to-back goals, including an impressive unassisted conversion to make it 11-7 with less than seven to go. However, Cornell closed out the game with a 4-0 scoring run.

Rutgers gets a week off before it hits the road for a matchup with No. 7 Michigan on Saturday, April 13 in Ann Arbor.
