Huang Prepares for NCAA Regionals at Georgia

Sophomore to compete on floor exercise Friday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore Belle Huang is set to represent Rutgers gymnastics on Friday at NCAA Regionals. She will compete on floor exercise in the second rotation of the 2 p.m. session inside Stegeman Coliseum at the University of Georgia.

"Belle has a very elegant style to what she does on the floor," head coach Umme Salim-Beasley said. "She brings beautiful execution, showmanship and loves to compete. She's really pretty to watch. I think that you're going to see her go out and aggressively attack the routine and have a lot of fun."

A Second Team All-Big Ten selection, Huang finished the season tied for 59th in the nation out of 505 qualifiers with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.885 on floor exercise. She scored a 9.800 or better the last eight meets and had a career-high 9.925 in the home opener at the Livingston Gym on Jan. 19. The Maryland native recorded a 9.900 or better on the event three times overall this season.

Huang scored a 9.825 on floor exercise as part of her trip to NCAA Regionals as a freshman in 2018. The highest mark ever recorded by a Scarlet Knight on the event at NCAA Regionals was 9.990 in 2002 by Courtney Turner, a member of the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. That score earned her a trip to NCAA Nationals.

"I am definitely excited to return to NCAA Regionals," Huang said. "Honestly, I'm preparing like this is just another meet. I have been doing the floor assignments that I have been given the past two weeks, working on details like landings. I've been making sure my feet are landing perfectly and even."

Huang will take her turn in the second rotation of the meet during Kentucky's turn on floor exercise. The top event specialist in each event (not on an advancing team or an all-arounder) advances to the national championship (in that event only).

"The choreography makes it unique," Huang said of her routine. "I really enjoy dancing out there. I try to make it sassy, fun and show it off. I've felt confident with my routine all season."

This will be the ninth consecutive year the Scarlet Knights have representation at NCAA Regionals. RU last traveled to Georgia in 2014 as a team for NCAA Regionals, with Alexis Gunzelman earning a bid to NCAA Nationals after her all-around performance (39.175).
