Wingert Earns Softball’s First All-ECAC First Team Selection

Distinction derived from 87 NCAA Division I institutions

DANBURY, Conn. (May 23, 2019) – Freshman catcher Katie Wingert of Rutgers softball adds to a growing list of accolades with the Scarlet Knights' first ever selection to the All-ECAC First Team.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) is an eighty-year old organization with 87 member schools across NCAA Division I, enhancing the experience of student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics by sponsoring championships, leagues, bowl games, tournaments and awards programs throughout the Northeast.

Wingert is Rutgers' first All-ECAC First Team selection. Taryn Atlee made the Second Team in 2017, while Jackie Bates and Chandler Howard earned Second Team honors in 2014.

The freshman from Carlisle, Pennsylvania has also been named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the NFCA All-Boardwalk Region Second Team this month.

Wingert – Rutgers' first Big Ten home run leader at the conclusion of the regular season – helped the Scarlet Knights clinch their highest Big Ten Tournament seed since joining the conference and qualify for their first non-conference postseason tournament since 1996 by hitting 18 home runs with 45 RBIs. Wingert was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter in Top 10 Plays and a one-minute segment after hitting three extra-inning, walk-off home runs in consecutive home games.

RU was 13-3 this season when Wingert hit a home run. The rookie is already making a move on the Rutgers record books, coming in fourth all-time in Rutgers history with 45 RBIs in a single season, while her 18 home runs come in second for a campaign. Those homers have paced the Scarlet Knights in setting a new school record with 54 home runs in 2019.

Wingert's rookie slashline finished at .317/.411/.702 with eight doubles and 32 runs scored. Behind the plate, Wingert has proven to be just as dangerous with her arm, amassing 12 caught stealing and three pickoffs while starting 52 of Rutgers' 55 games at catcher.
