Federica Greco, Terka Grusova and Vera Koprivova combined to qualify for seven individual semifinals on the world stage
NAPOLI, Italy (July 10, 2019) – Rutgers swimming and diving Class of 2019 graduate Vera Koprivova, rising senior Federica Greco and rising sophomore Terka Grusova combined for nine Top 16 finishes at the 30th World University Games in Napoli, Italy.
Each Scarlet Knight accounted for three Top 16 finishes apiece, while qualifying for seven individual semifinals at the global event. Head coach Jon Maccoll, who sent the most Rutgers swimmers to a Summer Universiade in program history, also served as an assistant coach for the Czech Republic National Team – the home of Grusova and Koprivova.
"I'm extremely proud of our women for their performances during a grueling, eight-day meet on an international stage," Maccoll said. "Everyone back home can be proud of the way our women represented Rutgers and their countries. These are the results we have come to expect with the culture of excellence we have been building.
"It was an honor to be an assistant coach for the Czech team," Maccoll added. "I would like to thank the Czech Swimming Federation for being a first-class organization and for hosting me."
Swimming for host Italy, Greco posted the highest world finish of the week from the Rutgers trio. A rising senior and native of Rome, Greco turned in a 59.70-second butterfly leg in the 4x100-meter medley relay finals on Wednesday and placed sixth at the World University Games. Greco also qualified for the semifinals in both the 50- and 100-meter butterfly events with matching 14th place finishes.
Koprivova swam into a pair of semifinals in the 50 and 200 Back, placing ninth in the 200 and 13th in the 50. In an eerie bit of déjà vu, Koprivova missed making the 200 Back finals by just one-hundredth of a second, reminiscent of the same margin Koprivova missed becoming an All-American in March at the NCAA Championships. The young alum also swam the leadoff leg in the Czech Republic 4x100 medley relay, which placed 10th at the Games.
Grusova went 3-for-3 in qualifying for semifinals in her trio of backstroke events. The rising sophomore finished 12th in the 100, 15th in the 200 and 16th in the 50.
The Summer Universiade is an international university sports and cultural event that is staged every two years in a different city. These games draw many thousands of student-athletes together to compete, making it one of the largest multi-sport events in the world.
Embracing the motto of 'Today's Stars, Tomorrow's Leaders,' the Summer Universiade incorporates educational and cultural aspects, encouraging student-athletes from around the world to combine high sports performance with their intellectual pursuits.
