Jul 25 | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers track and field will have three alumni in action at the 2019 Toyota USATF Championships July 25-28 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Former Scarlet Knights Chris Mirabelli (Javelin), Asha Ruth (200m, 400m), and Rudy Winkler (Hammer) will compete in their respective events across the four-day event at Drake Stadium. Additionally, volunteer coach Sam Mattis (Discus) joins competition alongside the trio.
CHRIS MIRABELLI | JAVELIN
Mirabelli wrapped up his career as a four-time All-American and three-time Big Ten Champion in the javelin. This past season, the Lumberton, New Jersey, native claimed his third Big Ten title in the javelin with a throw of 71.83m (235' 8"), earning First Team All-Big Ten status for the third time. He went on to finish ninth in the nation at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a throw of 69.71m (228' 8").
Mirabelli became the program's first ever four-time All-American in a single event in the outdoor season alone, claiming the recognition in the javelin at four outdoor championships. On the USATF stage, Mirabelli won the javelin title at the 2015 Pan American Games.
ASHA RUTH | 200M, 400M
A four-time All-American, Ruth set nine Rutgers records during her illustrious career, four of which still stand today. During her time "On the Banks", Ruth collected All-America accolades with the 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads in 2013 and individually in the long jump in 2012 and 2013. She claimed three long jump conference titles, including gold at the American Indoor Championships in 2014 and the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in 2013 and 2012.
Following graduation, Ruth helped Team USA set a new American record in the 4x200m relay in 2018 and was a finalist in the 300m at the 2017 USA National Indoors. She also competed at the 2014 USATF National Club Track & Field Championships winning gold in the 400m and silver in the 200m.
RUDY WINKLER | HAMMER
Winkler, the 2018 USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year, was a four-time First Team All-American. In just one season as a Scarlet Knight, Winkler claimed the Big Ten hammer throw title with a mark of 73.85 (242' 3"), breaking the Rutgers record for the third time and setting a Big Ten Championship record in the process. Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Winkler captured the 2017 national title in the hammer while at Cornell, finishing as runner-up in 2016 and top 8 in 2015.
Winkler enters the weekend as the reigning USATF Champion in the hammer, claiming the title in 2018 with a throw of 73.76m (242') at Drake Stadium. Additionally, in 2016, Winkler posted a personal-best mark of 76.76 meters (251" 10') at U.S. Olympic Trials, earning the win in the trials and a trip to Rio 2016, where he placed 18th.
