VALENCIA – Rutgers shot 54.2 percent (32-of-59) to defeat the CC Basketball Academy 86-47 Saturday evening in a contest halted after three quarters due to moisture on the court. Junior Jacob Young was 7-of-8 from the field to score a game-high 19 points and sophomore Ron Harper Jr added 18, as the Scarlet Knights led by as much as 41 points in the decisive victory.
"We had to cut the game a little bit short, but we did a lot of good things," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "We were much improved in terms of our turnovers, shooting the ball, and getting to the rim. We have a lot of unique pieces. Everyone passed up a shot to get us a better shot."
The Scarlet Knights out-rebounded their hosts by a 36-26 margin and forced 21 CCBA turnovers. Sophomore Myles Johnson grabbed 10 boards with four steals, while senior Shaq Carter and sophomore Montez Mathis both had seven rebounds.
Freshman Paul Mulcahy dished-out five assists to help the Scarlet Knights accumulate 24 helpers on 32 field goals. Junior Geo Baker and Mathis both added four assists in the balanced attack.
"We had good efforts," said Pikiell. "A lot of guys contributed and that was a good thing to see."
Junior Peter Kiss joined Young and Harper Jr. in double digits, contributing 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
"It's been a great trip," said Kiss. "We came out tonight and had a lot of fun. I think we've continued to gel through our first two games and we'll keep learning and getting better. We play hard, share the ball and move on to the next play."
Through two of its four scheduled games on the tour, Rutgers has established an average victory margin of 28.5 points and utilized balanced minutes among its scholarship players.
"We're getting what I thought out of the trip," said Pikiell. "We're trying a lot of different lineups and doing lot of mix-and-match. Our size is really good. A lot of guys made threes tonight, which was good to see. It's been fun. I'm looking forward to a couple more in Barcelona and having a better feel for the team after those two games."
The Scarlet Knights depart for Barcelona on Monday and meet the Mataro All-Stars in an 8:30 p.m. tip-off that evening.
"The tour and the country have just been spectacular," added Pikiell. "There are great people here, including Rutgers people. We've encountered many alums, met some a breakfast this morning, so it's been exciting to spread the word."
