
Men’s Basketball Concludes Tour with 4-0 Record

BARCELONA, Spain – Junior Geo Baker scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting with seven assists to help Rutgers to a 104-87 victory over the El Maresme All-Stars on Wednesday evening. Shaq Carter posted his second straight double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, as the Scarlet Knights concluded their tour with a 4-0 record.
"It was a hard-fought game," said Baker. "They were a really tough team that made tough shots. We handled some adversity and bounced back. I'm just happy we came away with the win."
For the first time during its tour, Rutgers had to respond to a deficit. Trailing 53-44 at halftime, the Scarlet Knights outscored El Maresme 38-19 in the third quarter to gain control. Carter scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting with eight boards in the period, while guards Jacob Young, Montez Mathis and Baker combined to score 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four assists.
"I was just trying to be aggressive and help lead my team," said Baker. "That's one of my main jobs as a point guard. Tonight the shots were falling for me, but on another day they are going to be falling for someone else."
Young posted 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with six assists, while Mathis made 5-of-7 field goal attempts to contribute 11 points. Mathis also grabbed eight rebounds to help the Scarlet Knights establish a 62-32 advantage on the glass.
Graduate transfer Akwasi Yeboah has another solid evening, scoring 10 points and corralling eight rebounds against a veteran squad that was limited to 34.4 percent (11-of-32) in the second half.
Rutgers, which led by as much as 17 points, made 51.2 percent (43-of-84) of its field goals and dished-out 25 assists. In its four games abroad, the Scarlet Knights issued 80 helpers, an average of 20 per contest.
