Men’s Basketball Meets Madrid

MADRID – Rutgers men's basketball arrived in Spain on Tuesday to begin its tour of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona. After an approximately seven-hour and 15-minute flight, the Scarlet Knights wasted little time immersing themselves in the local culture of the capital city that serves as home to more than 3.1 million residents.
The team hotel in Madrid is located in the renowned Art Walk, which offers access to many enriching museums, monuments and landmarks. The travel party immediately took advantage of its surroundings via a guided walking tour that included visits to Plaza Mayor, Debod Temple, Gran Via, Palacio Real and Plaza de Espana.
"Everyone was a little tired getting off the plane with the time difference," said sophomore Ron Harper, Jr. "Now that everyone is out and enjoying the sights, we are really beginning to appreciate the country. This is going to be a great experience for me and my teammates. We're all looking forward to it."
Despite the six-hour time change, the Scarlet Knights were undeterred by jet lag and consumed locally sourced market cuisine offered by the many restaurants and cafes that dot the city's landscape.
"The first day has gone really well," said junior Geo Baker. "We were able to walk around, see monuments and learn about the city's history. We also enjoyed good food and ate tapas. I had some avocado toast with shrimp, so it's a good day."
Wednesday will feature a tour of the historic city of Toledo. Known as "the imperial city," it dates back to the Bronze Age and is a world heritage site. Among its buildings are the cathedral of Santa Maria and the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. Toledo has been home to artists Garcilaso de la Vega and El Greco.
In the evening, Rutgers will play the first of its four scheduled games, meeting the Madrid All-Stars in a 7:30 p.m. local tip-off.
Fans can follow the tour via the team's Twitter and Instagram accounts. Highlight videos, statistics, game recaps, stories and photos will be posted throughout the trip.
