Men’s Basketball Takes Flight in the Imperial City

TOLEDO, Spain – Rutgers men's basketball visited "the imperial city" of Toledo, also known as "the city of the three cultures," Wednesday on its tour of Spain. During the excursion, the Scarlet Knights literally took flight, soaring across the Tagus River via the longest urban zip line in Europe.
"I feel good. I feel like I'm living life on the edge," said sophomore Ron Harper Jr. after traversing the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula via a secured cable.
"You only live once," added junior Peter Kiss upon crossing the expanse.
The zip line is located in the heart of Toledo Old Town, adjacent to Puente de San Martin, a scenic 14-century pedestrian bridge featuring five arches and sweeping views.
The zip line was one of many experiences enjoyed by the Scarlet Knights during its guided tour of the world heritage site city that dates back to the Bronze Age and is often regarded as the "soul of Spain." Toledo was home to artists Garcilaso de la Vega and El Greco, who depicted the hilltop town in his celebrated 1597 painting.
Renowned since the 16th century for its steel, Toledo's high-quality alloy is remarkably durable and manages to remain flexible enough to be made into swords. As such, Toledo was a center of traditional sword-making and its swords became the standard weaponry among the Romans.
The Scarlet Knights capitalized upon their metallurgical correlation, visiting with a blacksmith to witness and learn about sword-making craftsmanship in the traditional style.
On Friday, the Rutgers travel party departs for Valencia, a port city that lies upon Spain's southeastern coast. Known for its arts and sciences, the city offers futuristic architecture and popular beaches on the Mediterranean Sea.
