Rutgers Head Coach Chris Ash
CHRIS ASH: We'll go ahead and get started.
First, just would like to thank the fans that showed up today and cheered our football team on. Really appreciate it.
At the end of the day we didn't play well enough to win a game. That's my fault. It is all on me. I have to do a better job of getting the team ready. They did a better job than I did.
Penalties hurt. We had 11 penalties. They just killed drives and we fumbled the ball with the ball on the 12 yard line that led to a touchdown. You beat yourselves with penalties and ball on the ground. Squandered some field position. I think we thought we had some good starting field position, and it was tough to sustain drives.
We have to get touchdowns instead of field goals. If we would have gotten just a couple touchdowns instead of field goals it would have been a different game.
Defensively, we're down in the fourth quarter, the drives, a couple of the drives the fourth quarter just killed us.
End of the first half: Really two drives in the first half, the drive, we missed and hit a run, and letting him get 3 points at the end of the first half is unacceptable. Just not the way we should be playing in that situation.
It is all on me. We'll continue to work to try to get better.
Absolutely love our guys. Love our team. You know, we have had a really good two weeks. Actually we had a great, you know, practice, meetings, just chemistry on the football team since we started. I've got no complaints about anything from our players. They do what I ask them to do. Absolutely love all of them. Just got to find a better way to put them in position to win a game.
With that, I'll go on to any questions.
Q Chris, you say it's all on you. Where did you fail today?
CHRIS ASH: We lost the game. Didn't play clean enough.
Q (Question).
CHRIS ASH: I didn't prepare the guys well enough.
Q (Question).
CHRIS ASH: Played outstanding.
Q (Question).
>> We'll worry about that later. I'm just worried about today.
Q Did you discuss the decision to punt fourth and ten late in the fourth quarter from the Boston College 40?
CHRIS ASH: Fourth and ten, it is a long situation. Just felt it was best to do.
Q (Question).
CHRIS ASH: Yeah. He's fine.
Q The fan base, seems to be exacerbated judging from the attendance.
CHRIS ASH: I'm just trying to work like heck to get our football team to play better only Saturdays is about what my concern is.
Q I was hoping to ask this later in the year considering everything. Are you worried about your job status going forward?
CHRIS ASH: No. I'm worried about our football team.
Q (Question).
CHRIS ASH: I thought he played well. He had the one fumble, put us in a bad situation. You know, Raheem is consistently a guy that shows up making plays every single week. He did that today as well.
Q (Question).
CHRIS ASH: We'll do what's best for our offense, you know, moving forward. He's played multiple positions. He's learned multiple positions, and I think he does a great job. I absolutely love his competitive spirit and what he does every single day out there at practice, and what he does on gameday too.
Q Was anything said to Arthur before the game about his confidence level, anything of that matter?
CHRIS ASH: No. Before the game, best thing we do is we left him alone.
He worked really, really hard to improve. We have talk a lot about that in these sessions. And hopefully he saw a lot of that improvement today. He had his best game that he's had since he's been here at Rutgers.
Q Looking back, should you have been more aggressive at the end of the first half to try score a touchdown?
CHRIS ASH: We tried. We just didn't hit the plays.
Q Any shots in the endzone we...Â
CHRIS ASH: We tried. We tried. It didn't work.
Q Did you think about the punt on fourth and ten? They had a 13 play drive, you said defense was
CHRIS ASH: It is one of those things, guys, if you punt it, change the field position, it works, great, it worked; when it doesn't work, then you always question what you did. That's just the nature of, you know, being a coach and the nature of football.
Q You played one Big Ten game, why will it be better going forward
CHRIS ASH: We'll keep working. Like I said, I'm not here ever to make any prediction. I'm going to keep working. I love our guys, trying to give everything I can to be the best coach I can be to put them in the best position to be successful. That's it.
Q How do you keep the guy's confidence up?
CHRIS ASH: They have been trained. They're a really close group of guys. They love each other. They work hard for each other. I have got no complaints about our players. I've got no concerns about our players and their chemistry and their attitude moving forward.
Q Susan Robeson spoke to the team yesterday. What was that like? What was the message?
CHRIS ASH: She gave a powerful message about Paul's career here, and the challenges and struggles he went through. Really it was eye-opening for our players to hear some of the comments that she made about Paul. I really appreciate Susan coming and spending time with us.
Q Almost 300 yards rushing. What happened there?
CHRIS ASH: We didn't play well enough.
You know, we had some breakdowns. We wore down in the second half, in the fourth quarter specifically. You know, we expect to be able to stop the run better than we did today.
Q The penalties overall, was there one thing you can pinpoint that was the problem for the sloppy play?
CHRIS ASH: No. It was a number of things. We had I think three holding calls, false start. We had offensive pass interference. We ran into a defender. So there were mixed bags of different penalties.
All right, guys.
Thank you.
Rutgers Running Back Aaron Young
On the play of Art: "He moved the ball pretty well, we just have to keep it pushing. We have to move forward and just have to be more consistent and keep working in practice to get better each week"
Rutgers Quarterback Artur Sitkowski
On what he proved today:Â "Yes, I think I proved that I am developing. They coach me hard, they stuck with me I can't tank them enough and I appreciate it, they told me to keep working keep working"
Rutgers linebacker Tyshon Fogg
On getting frustrated: "It is not frustrating. "We condition for this. It is a four quarter game we have to come out and play all four quarters."
Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio
Opening Statement: "Great day to come down here and bounce back from a week ago with a win. We played a team that had a week off, a team that did a good job preparing for us with that rest. We came off an emotional game. We had a great week of practice and our kids came out and played really hard. It was great to see our fans down here on the road in New Jersey. And to see our fans from New Jersey and from New York come out for Boston College was really meaningful and really meant a lot to our program and to our players. That just was a fantastic thing. I thought we came out of the blocks fast. On defense we gave up one big play, but after that we really got our cleats screwed into the ground pretty well.
I like the way we came back in the second half. We were three and out and then we went on offense, got the ball, went down and scored. I like the fact that we had a couple of drives at the end that were big time drives. We were able to control the ball, run the ball well. AJ Dillon had almost 160 yards and David Bailey had about 80. And I thought Anthony Brown ran the ball real physical, real tough today. And our offensive line did a great job.
As a team, our defense really stepped up in the second half. So a lot of pieces really started coming together. Very proud of our team's resilience, their toughness, their energy. It was infectious in the locker room prior to the game at halftime, of course now as we just got together after the game. This is a young football team. We're a passionate football team and took the shot and bounced right back."
On improvements from last game: "Big picture, the second half, we started with a three and out, then got the ball and went and scored. That's an improvement. On defense, we took the ball away again. That's something we need to do. On offense, we didn't turn the ball over and we ran the ball effectively. The theme this week was effort and finish. And those two things, we wanted to have that every day. Almost what I felt like we had to do was reclaim that one step at a time, that one series at a time, one quarter at a time, one day at a time mentality. With maintaining effort in a nice elongated period. And that's a developmental thing, and I thought today was a great opportunity for us to see that development thing."
On Rutgers: "I thought Rutgers fought hard today, I thought they played hard on their home turf, those kids battled. You go on the road, you got a battle your way back. And our guys were able to do that. But I certainly don't want to overlook the fact that Rutgers went out here today and battled. Those kids battled. So I want to give credit to them."
On the team's New Jersey natives: "We have a big base of New Jersey players, but we're very proud to have a big base of New Jersey players on a football team. Not just Catholic school kids, but that's an important piece. But also a whole bunch of guys from New Jersey, we are a big believer in the five-hour radius. Boston College and New Jersey go hand in hand like a glove. It's very, very important to us, and will always be very, very important to us. And there's a lot of pride on our team of those jersey kids. There's BC pride with them. And there's pride from the state of New Jersey, which is a great football state, great High School football coaches in the state.
On QB Anthony Brown: "That that was a point of emphasis this week, that we had made a conscious decision to run Anthony more. Because he's and outstanding athlete, He is a real dual threat. We've got to bring that piece back alive. You got to be real, just a little bit with the injuries early in his career. But we're back. He's a big strong guy, 225 pounds, six foot three guy that can run and change direction. And he's got a real edge to him right now. He's still a guy. I just thank God every day that we have him for this season and another season after that, that he'll become a real, real veteran guy, which is a nice thing."
On an evaluation of the team after four games: "I feel a whole lot better today, from the standpoint that we responded. Right? And that's a growing thing. That's a thing that you have to grow as football. When you get punched in the face, you have to be able to learn how to respond. I thought we opened up with a huge win and ACC win. And then we carry that momentum. And then we got hit in the face. And we had to respond. And now we're going to head back into ACC play as a better football team. Still working every day to correct the things that we need to correct as we face increasing ability. Wake Forest is next, they're an explosive team on offense. We're going to enjoy this one. And then we're going to have a great week to fix the things that we need to fix to continue to have a better football team.
Boston College Quarterback Anthony Brown
Â
On playing in New Jersey: "Personally, I used to talk to my about coming back here and playing when I was younger. When I finally saw that we were playing Rutgers this season, it was a lot of enjoyment, a lot of excitement just to come back to play in front of a lot of family and friends. It was great getting a win back at home."
Â
On winning after loss to Kansas: "I think its huge for us, like you said last week we were disappointed. To come on the road against a team that had a bye last week, especially with a lot of fire in the regional rivalry, I feel like its huge to win and we just have to move forward."
Â
On playing with other New Jersey natives: "Even though we were on the road, it felt like we were at home. We have a lot of people on our team that are from New Jersey and the week of practice was big for us. Even though we needed a win, it was a bigger factor for us to come back home and get another win. I just felt like that was huge for us."
Â
On previously paths crossing with Rutgers QB Artur Sitkowski: "Me and Artur played for Air Sports Group 7-on-7 team together when I was a senior in high school. He was a really good quarterback, and he still is. He's learning some things. He's getting better. He's improving each year and he'll be fine."
Â
On winning in New Jersey: "I think its huge for us, coming back home and having a pipeline from New Jersey, having a bunch of New Jersey guys on our team and playing in New Jersey. Coming out with a huge win, its huge for us, its huge for recruiting. I always say we need more Jersey guys on the team, so hopefully this will boost that."
Â
On the team and individual play: "I would say as a whole and individually a lot of effort finishing can be huge for us. Today we had a lot of inconsistent plays. I would say I was inconsistent at times. The one thing I'm proud of our offense for is that we came back and finished the game. We made plays where plays needed to be made and I'm happy and grateful for that. Moving forward we have a really good opponent, Wakeforest, coming up, so we need to become more consistent. That is fixable and it will be fixed."
Â
Boston College Running Back AJ Dillon
Â
On him and RB David Bailey: "Executing at a high level in the right game is something that has been part of Boston College for a very long time. David is as good of a back as you are going to find at any other school or anywhere. There's not really a drop off when I come out of the game and when he's in the game. That is a great compliment. He's like a little brother to me."
Â
On what he's doing differently: "I'm not doing anything different. Like I said, that first week against Virginia Tech I felt fulfilled. I continue to feel that way. It's not about the yards for me, it's really not. I said at the beginning of the season, before the season, I'm trying to be someone at first downs and fourth downs, first quarter to overtime, I can be someone that is dependable. IF that means I need to block someone and not get as many yards, so be it. As long as we can come up with a win, that's all that matters."
Â
On evaluating the team from a coach's perspective: "I mean, I can't really answer that from a coach's perspective, but for me as a player, my evaluation is that were a tough group. We played with a lot of effort today. I feel like if we can continue to stay where were at right now and keep it like that every week, we can do well."
Â
Boston College Offensive Lineman Ben Petrula
Â
On the team's effort today: "We do really well opening up I think, and our second half play isn't usually as great, but I think today we really stuck it to them. We had a good stop on defense and a good drive on offense, so that really helped us. I think that's a big part of winning the game, when they get the ball at the half, stopping them there and getting the offense going really helps you."
Â
On Rutgers effort today: "I think Rutgers did a really good job rotating their guys. That shows that their tired, just rotation in general and also just standing around. Flow calls are really a good show, but that's not really what we're looking for. We're a tempo team and just run the play as fast as we can, and that's our conditioning coming into play. We know we're a better conditioned team than pretty much everyone that steps out on the field with us."
Â
On playing in New Jersey: "It's really cool. It's an important game for us coming back to our home state. Our families were all here so that's cool. I think that's the best part, really just playing in front of your family. Not just your family that comes to every game, but your family that can't always come. My grandparents can't come to every game, but they were at this game which was really nice. I think it's important that our wider families can see us play."
Â
Boston College Line Backer Max Richardson
Â
On today's win: "Its very good to come off of a tragic loss like last week when we were very underwhelming and holding them to 16 points today. That's one of our defensive goals, to hold them under 20 points. It's a great win, we'll never overlook any win. It's a great team win."
Â
On their takeaways: "We pride ourselves on takeaways and Coach Sheridan would say every day that there is on team in the nation that practices takeaway drills more than us. That's something that we pride ourselves on and it's great to reap the benefits of."
Â
On Rutgers' touchdown: "I'll tell you exactly what happened. It was my coverage responsibility and I played a little top heavy.
Raheem Blackshear is a great player and he put a move on me and he was off to the races. We knew he would be a big factor in their offense and we tried to neutralize him, but that was a great play he made."
