Women’s Golf Sixth Entering Bettie Lou Evans Finale
Sep 28 | Women's Golf
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Women's golf is sixth with a 593 (295-298) total after two rounds of the 13-team Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, played Friday and Saturday on the University Club of Kentucky Big Blue Course. Sophomore Maeve Rossi delivered the Scarlet Knights' top performance on day two of the 54-hole event, shooting a one-under 71 to provide RU three performers in the top 15 entering Sunday's final round.
"I am happy to see Maeve's game come together, as she finished under par today," said head coach Kari Williams. "We lost a few strokes at the end of the round and continue to work on avoiding costly errors throughout the 18 holes. We are still in position to catch a few teams on the leaderboard, and we will look to get off to a quick start tomorrow morning."
Rutgers is just one stroke out of fifth place, three strokes out of fourth and five strokes behind third place Eastern Kentucky entering the final 18 holes. Playing in second position, Rossi registered three birdies and thirteen pars on Saturday. Tied for 13th with a 147 (76-71), she is even on both par four and five holes.
"A few holes today were more challenging because of the shift in winds and the firm conditions," said Rossi. "I relied on my short game today to manage myself around the greens and to save a lot of pars out there."
Senior Carrie-Ann Lee and junior Harriet Allsebrook join Rossi near the top of the leaderboard. Playing in first position, Lee is 12th with a 146 (71-75), while Allsebrook is tied for 13th with a 147 (72-75). Lee is minus-one on par fives and has a team-best seven birdies on the par 72, 6,114-yard course. Returning from an elbow injury to compete in her first tournament of the season, Allsebrook has 25 pars and is even on par four holes.
Freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs and junior Eun Won Park complete the RU scorecard against a challenging field that includes programs from the SEC, Big Ten, The American and Conference USA. Diederichs is tied for 39th with a 153 (76-77) and Park is tied for 65th with a 158 (77-81) in the 75-player field.
RU is ahead of Tulane, Memphis, Akron, Indianapolis, Marshall, Murray State and Cincinnati.
Host Kentucky leads the field courtesy of a four-under 572 (285-287), with second place Penn State eight strokes off the pace. Tulane's Carlota Palacios is atop the leaderboard with a four-under par 140 (69-71).
Sunday's final round will begin via a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available courtesy of GolfStat.
