
Football Remembers Richard Policastro

Scarlet Knight letterwinner and Hall of Famer passed away Sunday
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football mourns the loss of letterwinner, Richard Policastro, who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 11 after suffering a massive stroke earlier in the week. Policastro is survived by his wife Lynda, daughter Debbie, son-in-law Frank, son Richie, daughter-in-law Leyla and three grandchildren – Frankie, Abby Rose and Santino. He also leaves behind a brother, Joe Policastro and sister, Valerie Fritz.
Inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame, Policastro was a first team All-East selection in 1969. He tossed 14 touchdown passes that season and led the Scarlet Knights to a 29-0 victory over Princeton in the nationally-televised Centennial Game, celebrating the 100th anniversary of college football.
A year earlier, in his first season after transferring from Virginia Military Institute, Policastro established six passing marks - 15 touchdown passes, 994 yards, four TD passes in a game, 17 completions and 30 pass attempts in a game, and 309 yards in a game. In 1969, the Highland Park native threw a record five TD passes against Colgate.
Mourners may visit with the family at the DeMarco Funeral Home, 2005 Rhode Hall Road, Monroe Township, on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 3-8 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 16 from 8-9 a.m. Funeral mass will held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Virgin on 198 Sandford Street in New Brunswick.
