Four-year letterwinner passed away Dec. 27
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball mourns the passing of Robert Applegate, who died Dec. 27 at age 59. A four-year letterwinner for the Scarlet Knights from 1979-82, Applegate grew up in Absecon and attended Holy Spirit High School before graduating from Rutgers University.
Applegate helped RU win the Atlantic 10 in 1981 with a team-high 41 strikeouts and four complete games. He followed that up by leading the pitching staff with 54.3 innings, 41 strikeouts and three complete games as a senior in 1982. The Scarlet Knights won the Atlantic 10 East Division for the second-straight season and advanced to the tournament finals under coach Matt Bolger.
Applegate worked as an account executive for Essex Brownell for 26 years. He is survived by his wife (Jacqueline), three children (Alexandra, Meghan, Robert), two grandchildren (Alessia and Beau), siblings (Donna, Debra, Andrew, Patrick) and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's memory may be made to True North Church, 721 Main Street, Sewell, NJ 08080.
