Baseball Clinches Series over Maryland in Run-Rule Fashion

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A dominant start from Vincent Borghese and a four-hit, three-RBI night from Yomar Carreras led Rutgers baseball to a 10-0 win over Maryland on Saturday night at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (24-26, 11-15) turned a pitchers duel into a blowout win over the Terrapins (23-28, 6-20), taking a 1-0 game in the fifth into a 10-0 run-rule win in the eighth.
RU went up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth but added on three in the fifth and four in the seventh before Carreras hit a walk-off single in the eight to close out the 10-0 victory.
On the mound, Borghese delivered his best outing of the season, coming one batter shy of an eight-inning complete game. He emptied the tank on 114 pitches, finishing with 7.2 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Carreras had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, finishing a home run shy of the cycle.
After both teams were kept off the board in the first three innings, Tyler Wiltsey got RU on the board with an RBI single in the fourth.
The Scarlet Knights added on in the fifth with an RBI sac bunt from Matt Chatelle and a two-run triple from Carreras, bringing it to 4-0.
With Borghese cruising on the bump, Wiltsey made it 5-0 with a double in the seventh and Chase Krewson delivered the exclamation point with a three-run home run.
Borghese went out for the top of the eighth at over 100 pitches and got the first two outs. After a two-out hit-by-pitch, Jordan Saviñon came in to get a strikeout and end the frame.
Needing just two runs to end the game in run-rule fashion, Chatelle singled in Gabriel Rivera and Carreras singled into right to bring in Chatelle and end the game at 10-0.
Rutgers will go for the sweep of Maryland tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Bainton Field, with RU set to honor the program's graduation seniors with a pregame ceremony.
